Hi, jles! Actually, Paul is addressing the same type of arguments that Christians face today: namely the exaltation of one Gift of the Holy Spirit over others... Paul makes it painfully clear that the Gift of tongues (strange tongues) is more limiting than simple preachig because while speaking in tongues edifies the believer who is communicating with God, those who preach Christ edify the whole Church (including those who are novice or unbelievers)... In verses 18 and 19 he emphasizes that though he is more able than those around him (speaking in tongues) he rather offer a few edifying words that are readily understood by all than thousands in a strange tongue that would leave most, if not all, unawares! God Bless! Angel |
