2 | Is the headcovering literal? (1Cor 11) | 1 Cor 11:5 | Arnold | 99176
The headcovering is literal, and involves no more than wearing a hat or a scarf, but whether or not you should wear one is another matter. Until recently, it was common for women to wear hats when attending church, and thus the Christian custom was the opposite of the Jewish one in which it is the men whose heads must be covered during services. I haven't seen any women's hats lately; some Eastern Orthodox women still wear scarves to church. Some understand Paul's instructions to refer to a woman who is doing something in church which a man would normally do such as leading in public prayer or prophesying - which may refer to preaching and instructing the congregation. This subject really involves matters which have become controversial in the modern church - questions as to whether men and women perform different functions within the church and how much emphasis, if any, should be placed upon male headship. I think in your personal case you should consider the practices within your own fellowship. Paul concluded his remarks on this theme by saying: "But if any man seem to be contentious, we have no such custom, neither the churches of God." (1 Cor. 11:16) In others words, 'What I've told you is what the custom of the churches is.' But in our day, most churches no longer have this custom, and it is not within our ability to change the customs which are followed. So, you can't be expected to be the only woman to wear a head covering in your church. If you want to, that's fine. But I would say you, personally, are not required to do so because the church is not following the custom. |

I realize this is an old thread and maybe no one will even see this but here goes: Arnold noted:"What I've told you is what the custom of the churches is.' But in our day, most churches no longer have this custom, and it is not within our ability to change the customs which are followed. So, you can't be expected to be the only woman to wear a head covering in your church. If you want to, that's fine. But I would say you, personally, are not required to do so because the church is not following the custom." Its true that most christian churches no longer use headcoverings for women. But there are several church groups that still do, although they may be hard to find in some areas. I became convicted in the spring of 2006 that if God inspired Paul to say the things he said, and he said that a covering was important, and that it was a separate covering besides the hair (by studing the two different words translated into 'covering' in this chapter) and also that Paul begins 1 Cor by addressing "2 To the church of God which is at Corinth, to those who have been sanctified in Christ Jesus, saints by calling, WITH ALL WHO IN EVERY PLACE CALL ON THE NAME OF OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST, their Lord and ours" because of those reasons I believed that it was to all believers in all times, and because I've been told that God never changes. I then believed that I needed to wear a covering too. At that time I was attending a denomination that did not believe it was necessary but I wore it anyway. And I was still accepted and loved and no one ever questioned by right to wear it. My family has since moved on, and has been blessed by finding MANY other families and congregations who still hold to this belief. And no I do not think poorly of women who cut their hair or don't wear a covering. God listened to my prayers before and he hears them now also. But I've also seen for myself that it is a clear and very noticable 'symbol' not only for angels but also for mankind, because when I'm out in public people automatically treat me different now. They see the covering and show respect, NOT for me but for God. |

A note to clarify, the women of Corinth( a very immoral city) would shave their heads and wear wigs that advertised they were available for sexual games, The fact that women wore head coverings made them stand out as the scriptures state "come out from the world, and things that are of the world" .. Both the OT and NT state that women should be covered....sadly we(Christians) have become laxed and our children will emulate our actions. Our God is a gracious God and we owe Him so much. God Bless!
