1 | Give me a little mor help on the hair ? | 1 Cor 11:1 | Signmanbob | 123782 | ||
I am not an expert on ancient Corinth but I heard Dr. David Jeremiah give a message on this passage and he presented a perspective that I had not heard before. He said that although this passage is culturally specific it also applies to today’s society. According to Dr. Jeremiah, in the time of the Apostle Paul for a woman to have her head uncovered was considered promiscuous. One of the most popular pagan gods of the time in Corinth was the goddess Aphrodite. Aphrodite was considered a fertility goddess who was worshipped through sexual orgies and prostitution. There were thousands of prostitutes in the temple of Aphrodite and it was common for them to walk the streets with their heads uncovered. This would be similar to the prostitutes of today wearing a revealing outfit to attract men. Through Paul’s teaching many of these prostitutes were getting saved and converting to Christianity. Because of the liberty of salvation through Jesus they felt that they could come to the Christian assemblies with their heads uncovered and boldly get up and speak or witness before the congregation. This would cause a disorder within the assembly which Paul knew had to be put to a stop for Jesus to be worshipped and the Gospel to be preached without distraction. This is why he was so adamant on this point in 1Cor 11. This chapter would apply today to a woman who would come to church in a revealing outfit. It would become a distraction and a disruption of the worship especially if she were to get up before the congregation and speak. Like I said I am no expert on this but I thought this might help shed some light on this very difficult passage. In Christ, SignmanBob |

broreggie, The answer provided by signmanbob appears to be a very good one. The key to this passage lays in the last verse of 1 Cor. 11. Verse 16 sats " But if anyone seems to be contentious, we have no such custom, nor do the churchs of God. " Long hair or short hair it really does not matter. Christ was not thinking about hair as He hung on the cross, He was paying our sin debt and as long as we come to Christ on His terms He could care less how our hair is styled. With this said the points made in signmanbob's post about appriate dress at church is right on. If for no other reason than respect for Christ. My answer is not intended to be harsh but so many people get tied up on this passage without considering the last verse of the chapter which really sums it up. I hope this helps.
