1 | Questioning God is criticizing him? | Rom 9:20 | ItsMee | 141449
I always had this vision of God as someone who wants us to ask him questions as a child does thier father. I can see this as a question a child would ask a father. Is it criticizing God to ask a legitiment question such as this? If so, why?
2 | Questioning God is criticizing him? | Rom 9:20 | Morant61 | 141457
Greetings ItsMee! This is a difficult passage, but allow me to share my understanding of it with you. The hypothetical objector in vv. 19-20 is not really 'questioning' God as much as accusing God. Paul has been making the case that God can and does work through individuals and nations to accomplish His will. The hypothetical objector then tries to excuse his sin by saying in effect, 'I can't help what I have done, God made me this way'! Paul responds to this compliant by first of all establishing that the Potter (God) has every right to use the vessels He has created in any way that He sees fit. However, Paul also goes on (throughout Rom. 9-11) to show that God's purpose is one of mercy, not judgement. He has worked in the way He has that He might have mercy on all, not to create a class of people who have no choice. I don't believe that God minds legitimate questions grounded in faith and submission. However, I believe that He does mind questions designed to excuse us and accuse Him. I hope this helps! Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |
