Scripture ... Rom 9:11-16 .................. God's day to you, g2dove, Rom 9:11 God chooses according to his own plan, not our actions. Rom 9:12 The older will serve the younger" This happened before they were born (Gen 25:23). Rom 9:13 When God said, "I loved Jacob and hated Esau" it shows how lopsided it was (Mal 1:2–3). Rom 9:14 This doesn't make God unjust, as many would think Paul anticipates our human response perfectly: Doesn’t that make God unjust? Of course not. God has every right to do as he pleases God told Moses, “I will show mercy to whomever I choose” (Exo 33:19). Rom 9:16 God’s selection is not conditional on human effort, but on God’s purposes. |

Dear Searcher, The other day one of the theology professors I know made an interesting observation. He said the questions that Paul poses in Romans are more than simply an effort to respond to possible objections. He said, if we do not invariably find ourselves asking those very questions, we have not properly understood Paul's preceding argument. I'm saving this one! I think it is a valuable principle of sound exegesis. I thought that any others who are interested in extracting the true meaning of the text would appreciate it as well. In Him, Doc |
