1 | Gift of speaking in tongues for all? | Rom 8:9 | Messiah'schild | 167882
I would like to hear opinions in reference to those who believe the sole evidence of the indwelling of the Holy Spirit is through the gift of speaking in tongues.

NASB Romans 8:9 However, you are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God dwells in you. But if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to Him. AMPLIFIED Romans 8:9 But you are not living the life of the flesh, you are living the life of the Spirit, if the [Holy] Spirit of God [really] dwells within you [directs and controls you]. But if anyone does not possess the [Holy] Spirit of Christ, he is none of His [he does not belong to Christ, is not truly a child of God]. [Rom. 8:14.] The Pentecostal church of which I am a member and with which I have been associated for 50 years does NOT teach that "the SOLE evidence of the INDWELLING of the Holy Spirit is through the gift of speaking in tongues." Neither does the Bible teach this. My Pentecostal church teaches that tongues is the INITIAL physical evidence of the BAPTISM in the Holy Spirit -- not the SOLE evidence and not the evidence of the INDWELLING Holy Spirit. A prominent Pentecostal writer (Ralph M. Riggs) wrote: The BEST evidence of the fullness of the Spirit is A CHANGED LIFE. (The Spirit Himself, by Ralph M. Riggs, Springfield, Missouri: Gospel Publishing House, Copyright 1949, 1977). So I don't know where you're getting this doctrine from, but it isn't from the Bible or the Assemblies of God. |

Great quote by Riggs, brother Kalos! As you know, Baptists often say "Once saved always saved." My pastor recently said, "A better statement would be 'Once saved always changed,' or even better, 'Once saved ever changing.'" I thought that fit well with Riggs' statement. Thank you for your always great posts! In Him, Doc |
