1 | if indeed we share in his sufferings | Rom 8:17 | robaston | 147069
The Niv says The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God’s children. Now if we are children, then we are heirs —- heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ, if indeed we share in his sufferings in order that we may also share in his glory. -- Romans 8:16-17 Scripture taken from the Holy Bible, NEW INTERNATIONAL VERSION®. Copyright © 1973, 1978, 1984 International Bible Society. All rights reserved throughout the world. Used by permission of International Bible Society. ....... does the 2nd "if" refer to heirs or His glory? |

2 | if indeed we share in his sufferings | Rom 8:17 | DocTrinsograce | 147070
Hi, Robaston... Welcome to the forum! That's a good question! Excuse me if I answer it indirectly. I sat here a while doing the Boolean thing... then I looked at about five different translations... then I looked up the various words in the Greek... then I sat and stared at it for a while. (I'm not very fast, I'm afraid!) I believe that Paul is speaking of our adoption. As adopted children we are also heirs to the Father, along with Christ. (As was the custom of Paul's day, though I think there are nuances of Roman adoption practices here.) These things will therefore be evidenced and attested to by our sharing in Christ's sufferings. (See also 1 Peter 2:21, 4:1, 13, 5:10... great stuff!) Consequently, we will share in His glory for God will be glorified. In Him, Doc |

3 | therefore be evidenced | Rom 8:17 | robaston | 147211
Thank you. Your sentence therefore be evidenced and attested to by our sharing in Christ's sufferings hits it on the head...at least that's my gut feeling...2nd if relates to sharing in His glory but if there is a unwillingness to share in His suffering, this can work against heirship! (interesting sidenote-M Henry said of Rom 8:17 "In earthly inheritances this rule does not hold, only the first-born are heirs; but the church is a church of first-born, for they are all heirs.") |

4 | therefore be evidenced | Rom 8:17 | DocTrinsograce | 147213
Dear roboston, Have you ever noticed how many times Scripture talks about suffering in the life of the believer? For some reason -- probably because we think that redemption is about *us* -- people believe that the promises of God are to make life easier. On the contrary, the promises of God are to make us holy! Having therefore these promises, dearly beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God. (2 Corinthians 7:1) I guess I'm getting a little off topic. :-) In Him, Doc |
