2 | Legalism? | Rom 7:6 | Asis | 86067 | ||
Leagalism is: strict, literal, or excessive conformity to the law or to a religious or moral code (the institutionalized legalism that restricts free choice) (Merriam-Webster). Legalism is when we say if you do it this way it is right, but only this way. It is, "Here are the rules. Do it like this because this is the only way." The Law bound us to the rules. Jesus freed us from the bondage of the Law. Yet we can bring people into bondage by making the law of liberty a set of rules. For instance, we could say if you are not baptized you are not saved. If you don't speak in tongues you are not saved. God will not answer you prayers unless you are on your knees and end it with "In the name of Jesus." If your arms are not strtched to the limit then you have not raised your hands. Et certra, et cetera, etcetera. Rom. 7:6 (NASB) 6But now we have been released from the Law, having died to that by which we were bound, so that we serve in newness of the Spirit and not in oldness of the letter. 2 Cor. 3:5 through 2 Cor. 3:6 (NASB) 5Not that we are adequate in ourselves to consider anything as coming from ourselves, but our adequacy is from God, 6who also made us adequate as servants of a new covenant, not of the letter but of the Spirit; for the letter kills, but the Spirit gives life. Following the letter of scripture and leaving out the spirit of scripture is legalism. examples are aany of the objections raised by the Pharasees about Jesus doing anything on the sabbath. Matt 12:1-14; Mark 2:23-28; Mark 3:1-6; just to name a few. |
