1 | Scripture reference? | Rom 6:14 | Morant61 | 147265 | ||
Greetings Merv! I have posted many times on James 2, so I don't want to open up that whole topic again. :-) But, my short response would be that James 2 speaks of 'works' as evidence of salvation, not a requirement for salvation. As for Rom. 9:31-32, this is the exact opposite of what you said. The Jews were trying to 'work' for salvation, but could not because you can't earn it anyway. Let me be clear! In your quote, you said that 'righteousness' is based upon obedience. This means that 'rigtheousness' requires us to obey in order to get it. However, this is not what Scripture says my friend! Rom. 4 deals with this whole topic. Paul says there in v. 6: "David says the same thing when he speaks of the blessedness of the man to whom God credits righteousness apart from works:" We are justified by faith in what Christ has done, not by what we do! Hey Tim: I appreciate your comments !! Hopefully we are both gaining from these discussions ans even if we do not change our positions on certain doctrines it will challege us to be more equipped to answers these tough questions. Ok Rom. 9. Now clearly the Jews kept the law and even made it more burdensome. But the question is "I think" - which Rom. 9. posses is do we attain righteousness by law or faith. Clearly it is by faith. I do not think I am saying anything opposite to the scripture. Remember Tim that God not only expected them to keep the "law" (10 commandments) but when they did sin they needed to perform the requirement of sacrifices to atone for there sins. This was done daily by individuals and yearly by the priest. So there sins were always present in there mind. The problem that occured is that they kept the "tried" to keep the law (10 comm.) but always failed. They failed in this promise to God because we as man cannot keep the law. Only through God's power (Holy Spirit) can man keep the law just as Christ kept the law for our example and to perfect the sacrifice for sins. They killed a Perfect Man (Jesus) although He did not deserve death but there was no sin in Him to cause a penalty of "death". Death is only required because we "man" is sinful. Almost all Jews rejected Jesus as the promised Saviour (Perfect Lamb Sacrifice for our sins)(which we both agree). This rejection fullfilled the 490 year probationary period for the Jews (Daniel 70 weeks of years prophecy). Thus the gospel went out to the gentiles and Jersalem was destryed in 70 AD. We are now all Spiritual Jews of a circumcised heart. Ok Tim - now the Jews did the sacrificial system to yes atone for their sins but lost faith in understanding that a Savior was coming to save them from there sins and give them the strength to overcome sin. This lost faith in understanding God was sending His son to replace the sacrificial system was evidence in the Jews not recognizing Jesus as the Saviour but instead were looking for a Messiah to save them from perscution. There faith went from doing the law (ceremonial) of sacrifices to reflect a coming Saviour to doing the sacrifices in actually thinking they could be righteous before God for doing them. That is why so many times God says he disliked there sacrifices and feasts - even though He was the one who commanded Moses to put these in place to atone for there sins. There faith had shifted to believing the law could save them instead of believing that those sacrifices was to give them faith (shaddow) that a coming Saviour would take away the sacifices because He was the Perfect Sacrifice. Now if God only required "faith" in this coming Saviour - THEN WHY REQUIRE THEM TO SACRIFICE ?? Just like Rom.16:26 and Rom. 1:5 says that there is obedience of Faith. Heb. 11:7 - by faith Abraham offered up his son. Faith always results in action to reflect our faith. Col. 2:14 and Eph. 2:15 - are speaking of the sacrificial system being abolished by Jesus at the cross. These laws were nailed to the cross. To keep sacrificing made His work on the cross of none effect. But the Jews had lost faith that a "replacement" for there sacrifices was coming so they did believe in Christ because He taught things against the Pharisees burdensome law. They mad it burdemsome because they had to do it to be saved. But scriptures clearly teach that blood of bulls and lambs CANNOT take away sin. But they had "righteousness of law" instead of "righteousness of faith". But the key point is when they did do theses sacrifices - what did it represent in there heart. There heart was with saving them through the law instead of reminding them that they would be saved through Jesus's blood. So just as Paul teaches: We do not destroy the law "GOD FORBID". Math. 5:17-18 -- God's 10 comm. and other statues (like diet and healthy living) are what God expects us to obey out of love - just as Abraham reflected his faith a love for God in obeying God's command to sacrifice his son. 1 John 2:6 clearly tells us what is sin - and Jesus in John 15:10 clearly is our example of a sinless life (keeping His father's comm.)
