1 | What does Romans 2:12 mean? | Rom 1:19 | BradK | 118888 | ||
What does Romans 2:12 say? How are we to understand this verse? The late A.T. Robertson, a noted Greek Scholar had this to say: "Have sinned (hmarton). Constative aorist active indicative, "sinned," a timeless aorist. Without law (anomwß). Old adverb "contrary to law," "unjustly," but here in ignorance of the Mosaic law (or of any law). Nowhere else in N.T. Shall also perish without law (anomwß kai apolountai). Future middle indicative of apollumi, to destroy. This is a very important statement. The heathen who sin are lost, because they do not keep the law which they have, not because they do not have the Mosaic law or Christianity. Under law (en nomwi). In the sphere of the Mosaic law. By the law (dia nomou). The Jew has to stand or fall by the Mosaic law." [Robertson's Word Pictures] BradK |

Hi, BradK! I think that Romans 2:12 must be read in light of Romans 1:18-24, with emphasis on 19-20. Since not all were people of God, not all had the Mosaic Law; but ignorance of the Law would not be their excuse since God had allowed Himself to be known to them through nature (both the world about them and their own existence). In essence, God provided guidence to the Jews, via Mosaid Law, and the non-Jew through nature. They would fail or succeed according to their own inclinations! God Bless! Angel |

Hello Angel, "In essence, God provided guidence to the Jews, via Mosaid Law, and the non-Jew through nature. They would fail or succeed according to their own inclinations!" Paul's summation in Romans 3:9-10 is that they will fail in either regard. There is no success concerning salvation whether through the works of the law or through our own works based on conscience. ""In essence, God provided guidence to the Jews, via Mosaid Law, and the non-Jew through nature." Hi, Steve! I do not think that my statement claimed that Jews are saved by obedience to the Law and that non-Jews are saved by the whims of nature... My statement addresses the fact that we have no excuse, Jews and non-Jews, for not getting to know God. The Jews had the Mosaic Law while the non-Jews had nature to make them aware of God. Neither the Law nor nature have the ability to save us (grant us eternal life)--this was never my argument. Thank you for your input. God Bless! Angel |

Hello Angel, I stand corrected. My response to you came on the heals of a very similar subject I addressed with another forum member. I had wrongly assumed you were going to follow the same incorrect path. Thanks much for the gracious reply. Steve |

Hi, Steve! I understand! I have found myself in that same situation... people introduce a question or a statement only to contradict any response that do not support their personal views--even when the Bible is the only source being cited! God Bless! Angel |
