1 | Government? Ministers for Christ? | Rom 13:4 | humility | 215699
I am not all against government authorities, I live them with all my heart! but I would like someone enlighten me a little more on this passage. I need someone to explain to me, if this scripture verse is true, why is there so much police brutality and corruption in the government? Is this scrpture verse saying that these people suppose to be "Christians" or that it is God's will that they be there?

Dear humility, Although you forgot to mention the verse relating to your question, I surmise that it was somewhere in the discussion found in Romans 13. I'm always surprised that believers aren't being taught by the church those fundamentals that were regularly topics of instruction scant centuries ago. Nonetheless, you are not alone by asking this question. I would think that few believers are able to provide a Biblical answer. The trouble is, we could write pages and pages in answer, and cite many thousands of pages more. Furthermore, those answers would be built upon many other more fundamental teachings. For example, government is commanded by God in what the old divines called the "social mandate." When men manage their worldly affairs by exercising dominion, they are imitating their Creator. Chaos is always a bad and wasteful thing. A government uses very many ways to increase order, coordinate effort, manage resources, and insure equity. Even with all that, they can grow corrupt -- and invariably do -- not because there is anything inherently wrong with them, but because of the people associated with them. The fall of Adam infected and affected every aspect of humanity. Human government never lasts forever. Furthermore, human government often transforms into some fundamentally evil (Psalm 2). Nevertheless, God is sovereign over the nations (Psalm 47:7-9; Daniel 2:20-21; 4:34-35). He exercises His sovereignty actively and particularly to achieve His eternal purpose (see post #193851). You see, the regenerate are citizens of two kingdoms. One is a physical kingdom of this world, the other is a spiritual kingdom not of this world. We are born into the first kingdom, grow up, and grow old, and die. We are reborn into the second kingdom, grow in righteousness, leave this world and enter the presence of our King, are clothed in perfection and incorruptibility, and will live eternally in that new kingdom. Etc. Etc. We have obligations and responsibilities to both kingdoms, for we live in both. Hmmm... I've already spent more time on this than I intended. Humility, you know the Word sufficiently to search out the various passages that instruct believers how to live in these kingdoms. Sorry, have to get off to bed! In Him, Doc |
