Hi, Dories... I've posted a number of times on the question of sanctification. Here are a few things that I've written on the forum in the past: Sanctification is a benefit that accrues to the believer immediately after regeneration. Here is the order from the orthodox camp: (1) Election, (2) predestination, (3) gospel call (4) inward call (5) regeneration, (6) conversion (faith and repentance), (7) justification, (8) sanctification, and (9) glorification. (Based on Romans 8:29-30) However, there is an aspect of sanctification that is a life long effort that will only be fully realized at glorification. Don't get the two aspects of sanctification confused. Progressive sanctification is what John Bunyan called "The Holy War." Thie writer of Hebrews called it the pursuit of holiness -- it is the process (versus the position) of sanctification. Sanctification involves conflict with yourself, with your flesh, with the world, and with Satan. The Puritans used to say that if a person was not battling sin, then that person should question whether they are a Christian at all. Sanctification is both a process and a position. Failure to recognize this dual aspect of the holiness of the believer is the root of many errors in doctrine and errors in behavior. The classic, orthodox definition of sanctification is found in The Westminster Shorter Catechism, questions 35 and 36: "What is Sanctification? Sanctification is the work of God’s free grace, whereby we are renewed in the whole man after the image of God and are enabled more and more to die unto sin and live unto righteousness. "What are the benefits which in this life do accompany or flow from justification, adoption and sanctification? The benefits which in this life do accompany or flow from justification, adoption and sanctification are: * assurance of God’s love * peace of conscience * joy in the Holy Ghost * increase of grace * and perseverance therein to the end." From these two questions it is obvious that sanctification encompasses all Christian living -- the entire process of being conformed to the image of Jesus Christ. It is a process which begins at the moment of the new birth, and presses on throughout the entire life of the believer until his last breath. The old divines wanted to see people growing up into strong assurance of God’s love, great peace of conscience, and authentic joy in the Holy Spirit. They said that the way to receive these blessings is through Spirit-worked sanctification. They advised their people: "If you don’t seek sanctification, you not only dishonor God, but you also impoverish your own spiritual life." I believe these concepts to be primarily Pauline, but also taught throughout the Word of God. I hope they help. In Him, Doc |
