1 | Why was Ananias struck dead? | Acts 5:3 | PaulLev | 234948
In Acts5:1-11 Peter and John addressed the congregation and instructed them to sell their possessions and bring them the proceeds. A man named Ananias and his wife Sapphira sold their land but withheld “some” of the proceeds. When questioned by Peter they each lied and said they had given over all the money. Both were struck dead. At no time in the life of Christ did he ever so much as harm anyone, let alone strike them dead. He scolded them, showed them their evil ways with parables and most importantly, offered them the opportunity to repent. Why then this intolerance and angry retribution from Peter (or God)?
2 | Why was Ananias struck dead? | Acts 5:3 | EdB | 234949
You have the story a little wrong. First scripture does not say that Peter and John addressed the congregation to sell their possessions and to bring them the proceeds. Ananias and Sapphira tried to pretend they were something they were not. They lied about their giving. I believe the seemingly drastic action that occured was because the church was in it's early days of development and had to be kept pure. Had this small amount of leaven had been allowed in the church it would have spread throughout the church in no time. |

3 | Why was Ananias struck dead? | Acts 5:3 | PaulLev | 235001
It was Peter who spoke to Ananais and Ananais was struck dead. If Ananais and his wife were guilty of anything it would have been not completely trusting the Lord to provide for them. They withheld a portion, but gave the majority of the proceeds. I'm sorry to say this sounds a little bit like extortion!
4 | Why was Ananias struck dead? | Acts 5:3 | EdB | 235002
What does scripture say here? They kept back some and Sapohira knew it, yet he presented it and fell dead. Then the reason why is explained in Act 5 Verse 4 I paraphrase, "Sapphira came in and was asked if they had sold the property for what they had given and she said yes. Peter then said why lie, it was your property you could have done what you wanted? Why have you conceived such a thing in your heart? What was such a thing? It was to play like they were big shots selling and giving it all to the church. When in fact they only gave a portion. That was a lie they tied to pass by the Holy Spirit and it didn't work. No extortion they didn't have to sell the property, they could have sold it and said we are giving you half, a quarter of it all. But they didn't they sold it one price, secretly held back some and pretended to give all of the sale. That was the problem. |
