Hi, hochimoe... Welcome to the forum, pastor! It is difficult to know precisely what the translators were thinking. I do not know of any documentation of their deliberations, except in general purpose. Robert Jamieson describes this phrase as a "beautiful expression for that Life in the Risen One which was the burden of their preaching!" John Calvin and John Gill, in their commentaries, say more, but they tend to concur. This is somewhat different from your supposition, but if we think more broadly, it certainly would encompass Christ's life, our life in Him, life through the gospel, etc. Perhaps the phrase hearkens back to the words of our Lord as in John 6:63, 68; 12:50; 17:3. In Him, Doc |

Thanks, Doc. I have the same commentaries as you have and read them before I posted. I just thought there my be a footnote out there somewhere from Lockman on what the translators were thinking. NASB is a great translation. In Him was life, and the life was the light of men. (Nas no capitalization) Blessings! |
