Greetings! See 1 Cor 11:30 - God discipline His children for their rebellion. I also see a parallel here with our "works" - when our motives are selfish, we are in rebellion and our works are "dead." (1 Cor 3:11-15) See Rev 3:1 about the dead church at Sardis. The Laodicean church (Rev 3:15-16)which is characteristic of this age, has works that are neither hot or cold - they are lukewarm - an excellent breeding ground for all sorts of deadly influences.
