Hi Searcher, Pneuma (spirit) is not the Greek word used for Luke 1:35's rendering of the "holy thing". Strong's #3588 is indicated. A companion verse we might consider is John 1:45,46, "Philip found Nathanael and said to him, 'We have found Him of whom Moses in the Law and also the Prophets wrote, Jesus of Nazareth, the *son of Joseph.' And Nathanael said to him, 'Can any good thing come out of Nazareth?' Philip said to him, 'Come and see.'" Personally, I would capitalize the *Son that I have starred above in the quote even though neither the NASB nor the NKJ do so. I can not agree with having the pronouns Him, Jesus, with a lower case "son". I say, if son is not capitalized then "Him" should not be either. I capitalize "Son and Him" when they speak of Jesus throughout the Scriptures no matter what the belief of individuals in the various recorded incidents. Actually, here in John 1:45, "He" or the "One" of whom Moses spoke is understood in the Greek. My point is that both Luke and John here talk of the holy thing and the good thing. This [first-born] male, was a holy offspring; it was unique, a only one of a kind. He was born in the likeness of men, and was circumsized in Luke 2:21. Luke 2:21, NASB, "And when eight days were completed before His circumsion, His name was then called Jesus, the name given by the angel before He was conceived in the womb. And when the days for their purification according to the law of Moses were completed, they brought Him up to Jerusalem to present Him to the Lord (as it is written in the Law of the Lord, "Every first-born male that opens the womb shall be called holy to the Lord"), and to offer a sacrifice according to what was said in the Law of the Lord, "A pair of turtledoves, or two young pigeons."" If you are interested in further discussion, I would like to consider John 1:34 and John 18:37 with you later. From the heart, Ray |

Word Study ... Ho (Greek) on (Strong's 3588) ... Ray, Strong's 3588 is indicated above, it is an article. not an adjective. It is in Luke 1:35. Spirit (pneuma - Strong's 4151) is there, in conjunction with hagios (holy - Strong's 40). John 1:45 does not say the prophets called Him the son of Joseph. "Son of" was how people identified people. Joseph was His earthly father and I think he adopted Him. He is the Son of God ... the demons knew it (Matt 8:29, Mark 3:11, Luke 4:41) ... they were not on His side , others acknowledged it (Mark 1:1; John 1:34, 49) ... and He even said He was the Son of God (Luke 22:70; John 10:36). There is more Scripture to prove He is the Son of God ... therefore Luke 1:35 means to the Holy Spirit impreganted Mary. John 18:37 is about His kingship and the context is about authority ... again proving He is the Son of God, not Joesph. Searcher PS Would you like the entire verse in Greek? |
