Various Views of Matthias' Selection 'Question: Was Matthias or Paul the apostle who replaced Judas? 'Answer: I’m sure you know that there are different opinions concerning the disciples’ selection of Matthias. The disciples were told to “wait” until the Spirit was sent, and yet they quickly went ahead and chose a replacement for Judas. They did so out of a sense of urgency, since they thought the kingdom may come at any time. Matthias is selected, and yet we really don’t hear of him again, but later on Paul is raised up, and we don’t cease hearing of him, or from him. This certainly raises the question as to whether or not Paul was God’s replacement for Judas, while Matthias was the disciples’ choice.' (www.bible.org/qatopic.asp) 'In Acts 1, Peter and those with him are prompted to fill Judas’ place as an apostle, and as a witness of our Lord’s resurrection. The process appears to be a godly one. They are prompted by Old Testament prophecies from the Book of Psalms. They take action after prayer and discussion, when unity regarding their actions has been reached. They nominate two men and leave the final selection to God. What was done seems to be biblical and necessary. And yet we never hear of Matthias again (by name). He appears to play no significant role in the church. But then in chapter 8, we are introduced to Saul, who is converted in chapter 9. Saul, who becomes Paul in chapter 13, becomes not only an apostle, but the driving force behind the evangelization of the Gentiles. The choice made by the apostles in Acts 1 appears to be overruled by God. He will appoint His apostles His way.' (www.bible.org/ page.asp?page_id[equals sign]3313) 'Judas Iscariot, who betrayed Jesus, was replaced in the twelve apostles by Matthias (see Acts 1:20-26). Some Bible teachers view Matthias as an "invalid" member of the 12 apostles, and instead believe that the Apostle Paul was God's choice to replace Judas Iscariot as the twelfth apostle.' Kalos, "And yet we never hear of Matthias again (by name). He appears to play no significant role in the church." ... "Some Bible teachers view Matthias as an "invalid" member of the 12 apostles," Which begs the question: How many other apostles of the original twelve were never heard of again and were they therefor "invalid" members of the tweleve? Is hearing of them again a valid criteria for determining their "validity" as apostles? Kassy had a simple biblical question which had a simple bibilcal answer, now being complicated by the unstated but very apparent fear and loathing of the possible implications of the text for apostolic succession. That should be another thread if and when someone has a question on it. This thread should have ended five posts ago with the simple and obvious answer to Kassy's simple question. Emmaus |

Sorry for eliciting such fear... it was only intended as friendly musing. We promise not to bring into the topic apostolic succession or any other extra-Scriptural topics. Therefore, be at peace, Emmaus, be at peace! | ||||||
