Like I said in another posting, John was humble enough to admit he wasn't the Savior. John 1:19-34 illustrates this beautifully, showing that John believed the truth that Jesus, not John himself, is the Messiah. John didn't baptize people into his own name, but used a "baptism of repentance." You will find this quote all over the New Testament in reference to how John baptized. I believe John baptized people into Jesus before Jesus was there to oversee it. And I think that Jesus didn't do a lot of baptizing himself. He mostly let the apostles do it after showing them how. At least the evidence indicates that. Anyway, they were definitely not worshiping John just because it's him who baptized them. Do you worship your preacher?

John's denial of Messiahship was not rooted in humility. It was a matter of speaking the truth!
