Hello popcorn, Good question- but one I don't think any of us can answer directly. In other words we can't speak for the decision the authors themselves employed. Keep in mind, the Amplified is a 'parphrase'- expanding upon the original language to attempt to provide a deeper sense of what the author is saying. It is not a translation. So, 'continued to increase' (ESV) is the Greek verb, 'auxano'. It describes what the 'word of the Lord' did. IMO, Intensified is simply a commentary upon this action. We might say, "it continued to increase- and intensified, prevailing mightily"! The Amplified reads, "Acts 19:20, "Thus the Word of the Lord [concerning the attainment through Christ of eternal salvation in the kingdom of God] grew and spread and intensified, prevailing mightily." By comparison: Youngs Literal Translation reads, "so powerfully was the word of God increasing and prevailing." Wuests Expanded Translation reads, "So mightily did the word of the Lord keep on growing and gaining strength." I hope this is of some help. BradK |
