Part 2 of 2 ...and, Matthew 21:23-27: 23Jesus entered the temple courts, and, while he was teaching, the chief priests and the elders of the people came to him. “By what authority are you doing these things?” they asked. “And who gave you this authority?” 24Jesus replied, “I will also ask you one question. If you answer me, I will tell you by what authority I am doing these things. 25John's baptism–where did it come from? Was it from heaven, or from men?” They discussed it among themselves and said, “If we say, ‘From heaven,’ he will ask, ‘Then why didn't you believe him?’ 26But if we say, ‘From men’–we are afraid of the people, for they all hold that John was a prophet.” 27So they answered Jesus, “We don't know.” Then he said, “Neither will I tell you by what authority I am doing these things. ...so knowing that Jesus expects all to receive John's baptism (either by John or Jesus' disciples) it is fair to surmise that Apollos' knowledge of John's baptism would refer to his own baptism in water... this is similar to the gentiles who knew only of water baptism and not of the Holy Spirit: Acts 19:1-7: 1While Apollos was at Corinth, Paul took the road through the interior and arrived at Ephesus. There he found some disciples 2and asked them, “Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?” They answered, “No, we have not even heard that there is a Holy Spirit.” 3So Paul asked, “Then what baptism did you receive?” “John's baptism,” they replied. 4Paul said, “John's baptism was a baptism of repentance. He told the people to believe in the one coming after him, that is, in Jesus.” 5On hearing this, they were baptized into the name of the Lord Jesus. 6When Paul placed his hands on them, the Holy Spirit came on them, and they spoke in tongues and prophesied. 7There were about twelve men in all.
