I'm trying to settle in my own mind whether or not the NT gives any credence to infant baptism. If the word "household" includes babies in this verse, it is a small amount of evidence for infant baptism. I realize that there are no direct stories in the NT where the Apostles clearly and directly baptized infants, but I want to make sure I research the topic completely. I had thought that Philip's statement to the Ethopian Enuch (Acts 8:37) was airtight against infant baptism, but I see in Metzgers'Commentary on the New Testament Greek that the verse was likely added to the original text. No arguing please, but I'm hoping that those of you out there who have considered both sides of this issue will lend your thoughts! Regards and Thanks! Huron |

Hi Huron! Part of the problem that we have in clarifying Biblical doctrine is that, regardless of how much we may allege against it, we are congregational-biased: meaning that we will see in the Scriptures what "our" church says. Christians were baptizing themselves for their dead loved ones, why did Peter, Paul and the rest of the Apostles not forbid them that practice since the dead could not be preached to but by Christ, and since the dead could not give even the simplest sign that they had Heard and Believed?: Otherwise, what are people up to who have themselves baptised on behalf of the dead?... (1 Corinthians 15:29) Since there is no Biblical formula requiring that a person be of a specific age before being baptized and since the Apostles did not forbid the rebaptizing of Christians for the sake of their dead loved ones why do we become so focused on setting an age limit to those entering the fold of Christ? Could it be pride? Could it be grandstanding? Could it be separation? God Bless! Angel |

Interesting angle, but I'm not sure that Peter, Paul, and the rest of the Apostles endorsed, or even allowed people to baptize themselves for their loved ones. Actually, it's a little unclear exactly what Paul meant in this verse. In any case, as far as I can tell, it's the only time in the NT that that phrase is used. Huron |

I would have to side with the fact that babies were NOT part of the household because they could believe, repent or confess the name of Jesus. This is further endorsed by the probable fact that the jailer was most likely an older man and thus all his kids would have been mature enough to have obeyed the gospel. Just my opinion. Blessings to you all. Country Girl |

Sometimes I feel like a nut: I left an important word, see below. I would have to side with the fact that babies were NOT part of the household because they could NOT believe, repent or confess the name of Jesus. Blessings to you. Country Girl |

Hi, Country Girl! Query: How many hours of preaching were required before baptizing people onto the Faith, several hours, dozens, hundreds? How did the disciples know that all who were preahed to understood and believed? Would there be a distinction on the amount of time required from those who were "slow" learners as opposed to those who were "fast" learners? These questions are not to confound but to enlighten... we must not determine for the Holy Spirit who is spiritually aware and who is dense! Jesus said that many who were last would be first (mostly in reference to the Jews and the Gentiles) but He also made this comparison in reference to those who are as children, trusting and eager to learn, and those who are wise in the ways of the world and can never be taught--they already know all (Masters of the Law, Pharisees, Sadducees...). What Jesus did was innovative so the very first disciples would be grown adults; but Jesus never rejected children as being inmature and unable to receive the Holy Spirit! (Matthew 18:3-4; 19:13-15) God Bless! Angel |
