1 | Abstaining from things strangled, blood? | Acts 15:20 | Wild Olive Shoot | 192116
Reference to things strangled and blood from v20 below: Are these upheld today as being necessary things and if not, why? Acts 15:19,20: 19 Wherefore my sentence is, that we trouble not them, which from among the Gentiles are turned to God: 20 But that we write unto them, that they abstain from pollutions of idols, and from fornication, and from things strangled, and from blood. Acts 15:28 For it seemed good to the Holy Ghost, and to us, to lay upon you no greater burden than these necessary things; Stand in His grace, WOS |

Dear Brother WOS, I am no expert in such things, but I will express to you what little I do understand. Consuming blood or animals that have been strangled is utterly odious to anyone with a Jewish upbringing. Even though the new Jewish believers were learning to live alongside gentiles in the faith, I think such requirements were primarily a kind consideration for the Jewish brethren. Much later, Paul doesn't reiterate this dietary prohibition. In Him, Doc |

3 | Abstaining from things strangled, blood? | Acts 15:20 | Wild Olive Shoot | 192129
So maybe it was given in the spirit of what Paul later wrote? The following as examples: 1Corinthians 10:25-33: v32 Give none offence, neither to the Jews, nor to the Gentiles, nor to the church of God: Romans chapter 14 v14 I know, and am persuaded by the Lord Jesus, that there is nothing unclean of itself: but to him that esteemeth any thing to be unclean, to him it is unclean. v21 It is good neither to eat flesh, nor to drink wine, nor any thing whereby thy brother stumbleth, or is offended, or is made weak. It comes down to promoting peace and harmony and not offending fellow believers? Am I thinking this through correctly? Stand in His grace, WOS |

WOS, Just so happens I was preparing for a Sunday School lesson a few weeks ago and the lesson was in Acts. Although it did not cover this passage of scripture I was reading through several chapters and came across this passage. One of the commentaries I looked at pointed to the Noahic Covenant (Genesis 9) (?) I'm no expert on the scriptures and know less about the OT then the NT but are we not still under the Noahic covenant? Also, I've been trying to research the Noahic Covenant and understand it better and based on what I have found so far I'm not even sure what verses this would include. I've seen it listed as Genesis 9 and also Genesis 8:20—9:17. Genesis 9:4 is what the commentary was pointing to regarding Acts 15:20 that got me interested in your post. I expect to learn something from this post as I'm sure the more learned among us will help me on this but I found the post interesting as I was just recently looking at it so I jumped feet first just to get these thoughts / questions out there :-) If not for His grace, could I stand at all? Gen 9:8 Then God spoke to Noah and to his sons with him, saying, Gen 9:9 "Now behold, I Myself do establish My covenant with you, and with your descendants after you; (All mankind came from Noah) Gen 9:10 and with every living creature that is with you, the birds, the cattle, and every beast of the earth with you; of all that comes out of the ark, even every beast of the earth. Gen 9:11 "I establish My covenant with you; and all flesh shall never again be cut off by the water of the flood, neither shall there again be a flood to destroy the earth." (never again) Gen 9:12 God said, "This is the sign of the covenant which I am making between Me and you and every living creature that is with you, for all successive generations; (this is the time frame which answers the question how long) Gen 9:13 I set My bow in the cloud, and it shall be for a sign of a covenant between Me and the earth. Gen 9:14 "It shall come about, when I bring a cloud over the earth, that the bow will be seen in the cloud, Gen 9:15 and I will remember My covenant, which is between Me and you and every living creature of all flesh; and never again shall the water become a flood to destroy all flesh. (never again is another timeframe answering when) Gen 9:16 "When the bow is in the cloud, then I will look upon it, to remember the everlasting covenant between God and every living creature of all flesh that is on the earth." (the words everlasting is a time frame that answers the question how long) Gen 9:17 And God said to Noah, "This is the sign of the covenant which I have established between Me and all flesh that is on the earth." (answers who the covenant is with) At this point in my journey I would say yes we are still under the Noahic covenant. |
