Greetings Hank! Basically, there are two possibilities. One view says that 'tasso' in Acts 13:48 means 'pre-ordained'. Thus, all of the Gentiles who believed were those that were ordained by God to believe. One problem with this view is that one would then have to say that all of the Gentiles who were 'ordained' to believe did so on that day alone since the verse that "...all who were 'tasso' believed"! ;-) The other view is that 'tasso', while passive in form, can often have a middle voice meaning. It could be translated as 'as many as were prepared or ready believed'. In this case, there is no thought of agency but only of status. One advantage of this view is that it does not try to equate 'tasso' with 'protasso', which is an entirely different word. Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |
