Is the use of a prayer shawl or prayer cloth Biblical? If so, where in scripture, are we (advised) to use a prayer shawl or cloth? I can't seem to find it. Thank you. | ||||||

First a prayer shawl is used to cover the head of a person that entering into the presence of the Lord to pray. This was a Jewish custom that requires the person should cover his head to pray. This practice was carried forward into the Catholic church also. A prayer cloth is taken from Acts 11:19 where handkerchiefs were taken from Paul and given to the sick and the sick were healed. Some teach it is a touchpoint of faith that allows a persons faith touch something tangible thus increasing their faith. However it is very easy to allow oneself to treat a prayer cloth as a talisman, or with an unstated idea the power comes from the cloth instead of the Hand of God. This can be very dangerous because people are putting their trust into what they can see or handle instead of having faith. It also comes very close to putting something other than God ahead of God. Some use prayer clothes as a way to convey one's assurance that they are praying faithfully for another that isn't able to be present. |
