1 | i want to no the truth | John 8:58 | Ray | 135965
Hi Mommapbs, Let me share a few Scriptures that I see as connecting the Light and the Life. John 8:12, "Again therefore Jesus spoke to them, saying, "I am the (Light) of the world; he who follows Me shall not walk in the darkness, but shall have the light of Life." 13 The Pharisees therefore said to Him, "You are bearing witness of Yourself; Your/ witness is not true." I see the connection between the (Light) and Your/ witness is not true. 1 John 5:20 speaks of the understanding of knowing (Him) who is true. And the proclamation that "This is the true God/ and eternal life." John 9:5 says that "While I am in the world, I am the (Light) of the world." Verse 14 says that Jesus/ made the clay, and opened his eyes. Jesus is the One who gives us light, in other words, enlightens us. He gives physical healing but more importantly, spiritual sight and understanding. The Spirit is the One who brings these things to our remembrance. 1 John 5:7, Interlinear (Nelson), "And the Spirit is the One who witnesses, because the Spirit is the truth." 1) What do you think of this interpretation with capitalization choices for John 1:4? John 1:4, "In Him was life; and the Life was the (Light) of men." From the heart, Ray |

Greetings Ray - in this verse, you don't seem to be following the same pattern. "In Him was life; and the Life was the (Light) of men." VS "In Him was life; and the Life was the light of men." Jesus declares "I am the Light of the world; he who follows Me will not walk in the darkness, but will have the Light of life." John 6:48 "I am the bread of life." There is an inconcsisteny here - why Light and not Bread? Blessings, mommapbs |

Hi Mommapbs, The pattern that I saw was concerning the (Light) of the world spoken of in John 8:32, John 9:5, and the (Light) of men in John 1:4. The pattern of Light of life and Bread of life which you find lacking is a good point. I am not totally against the way the NASB95 interprets John 8:12, but I was considering with you the introduction of the Life. I will therefore keep "Light of life" penciled in my personal copy. I have 72 posts concerning the "Bread" of life in the archives of this forum. 1) When looking at John 1:4 concerning "life", "life", and "light", I see the problem as one of relationship with the other. If the interpretation is "Light of men" then we should recognize Him as the "Life". The NASB95 does not have Life capitalized. 2) However, as one interested in counting the number of pronouns I would agree with the NASB95 in the number of pronouns capitalized. I would expect three pronouns of Deity for John 1:4,5. 3) The problem I see with the NASB95 for verse 5 is that the Light does not agree with "it". God is not an "it". The presence of light (lower case) would be an it to my mind. So I would offer two possibilities to anyone who might be interested in the interpretation of this passage with regard to capitalization. a) John 1:4, "In Him was life; and the Life was the (Light) of men. 5 The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it." b) John 1:4, "In Him was life, and the life was the light of men. 5 The Light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend (Him)." What are your thoughts? From the heart, Ray |

4 | i want to no the truth | John 8:58 | Mommapbs | 136047
Hi Ray - right off the top I am reminded that we are also called the "light of the world" (Mt 5:14) - therefore, our light(based on the presence of the Life within) shines in the darkness (the world in which we live) and the darkness (the futility of mankind's natural thinking) does not understand it. The light in this case is the testimony of the presence of Christ in our lives. All that being said, John 1:4, "In Him was life; and the Life was the (light) of men. 5 The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it." Well, these are my thoughts ! Blessings to you! mommapbs |

Hi Mommapbs, I hope that no one reading our discussion about these things has the impression that we are arguing. I see us simply delighting in God's (w)Word and discovering how these things relate to our lives. I like your thoughts here. My hypothesis of having three pronouns of Deity are not in your interpretation right now. But (based on the presence of the Life within) I believe that you would go along with this interpretation which would be choice (c) for our discussion. (c) John 1:4, "In Him was Life; and the (Life) was the light of men. 5 And the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it." 1) I would say that there is great significance in life as well as Life. There is significance in being filled with the spirit as well as being filled by the Spirit. There is significance in going to the strong refuge or rock, when we know the Rock. There is significance in going to the word of God in order to know the Word. 2) What do you think about this verse for considering the importance of (l)Life. John 10:10, "The thief comes only to steal, and kill, and destroy; I came that they might have life, and have [it] abundantly." From the heart, Ray |

Amen -Jesus came that we might have life! Now! (As per your stated rules - when Life references Diety vs life as God is not an it!) Blessings, mommapbs |
