What are we "set free" from? See Romans 8:2 - What is the law of sin and death? How do, or how might you appropriate this "truth" in you own life? I believe that this is an important benefit of our faith in Christ. Please support your responses with Scripture! |

2 | What are we "set free" from? | John 8:32 | Makarios | 109786 | ||
Greetings Mommapbs! Romans 8:2 "For the law of the Spirit of life has set you free in Christ Jesus from the law of sin and death." What is the law of sin and death? Without using any Study Bibles, :-) I believe that Paul is making a contrast here between the law of the Spirit of life vs. the law of sin and death. One is darkness, the other is light! The working of the Holy Spirit in the life of one who believes is a regular, daily procedure (like the law), but it is not 'mechanical' or two-dimensional in nature, since the Holy Spirit is alive inside of us! We are new Creations in Christ, free from the sinfulness of the body, ready to put on the new Creation, or the new self(Colossians 3:10-11), which is "a renewal in which there is no distinction between Greek and Jew, circumcised and uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave and freeman, but Christ is all, and in all." And I believe that this is the very spirit of what Mr. Martin Luther King Jr. meant when he was speaking of true peace and love in society. I believe that the law of sin and death is that which passes away in us as we are regenerated in Christ - the sinful nature. "Therefore, just as through one man sin entered into the world, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men, because all sinned-" (Romans 5:12) "knowing this, that our old self was crucified with Him, in order that our body of sin might be done away with, so that we would no longer be slaves to sin;" (Romans 6:6) I believe that the law of sin and death is that which is put to death once we place our faith in Jesus Christ, and become new creations in Him. How are we set free? Yes! We are set free from sin. "and having been freed from sin, you became slaves of righteousness." (Rom. 6:18) "But now having been freed from sin and enslaved to God, you derive your benefit, resulting in sanctification, and the outcome, eternal life." (Rom. 6:22) "The Spirit of the Lord GOD is upon me, Because the LORD has anointed me To bring good news to the afflicted; He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, To proclaim liberty to captives And freedom to prisoners;" (Isaiah 61:1) "Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty." (2 Cor. 3:17) And since we have the Spirit inside of us, then we have liberty from sin as well! We have been given this liberty through grace, since God loved us so much that He does not want us to perish (John 3:16), but to turn to Him; "for he does not willingly afflict or grieve the children of men." (Lamentations 3:33, ESV) I appropriate this "truth" in my life mostly in regards to being a 'slave to righteousness.' Day after day, I am called to live according to the direction of our Lord. But "slavery" or being a bond-slave is just the beginning of the experience, since I am gladly a slave to Christ! I can think of no better way to live life than to be a slave to our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. With Christ, all men and women of any age or station in life have a reason to live and a reason for being! We ARE the light! But the thing that we also have to keep in mind - We are the ONLY light in this darkened world that God has to work with, and if we don't or "choose" not to shine, then we are doing a great disservice to the kingdom of God. Pastor David Jeremiah described it like this: Christ is the "head" of the body, and all of the various saved people are all parts of the body.. Therefore, when the head wants to 'move' another part of the body, then the other body part must act in the way that the head directs. It is a shame that all body parts do not 'move' and act as swiftly as they could. My challenge is to make doubly sure that I follow Christ's lead in everything that I do. Blessings to you, Makarios |

Great post Makarious - I especially liked your personal application: "I appropriate this "truth" in my life mostly in regards to being a 'slave to righteousness.' Day after day, I am called to live according to the direction of our Lord. But "slavery" or being a bond-slave is just the beginning of the experience, since I am gladly a slave to Christ! I can think of no better way to live life than to be a slave to our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ . . . . My challenge is to make doubly sure that I follow Christ's lead in everything that I do." This is a picture of True Christian "activism" - following Christ! Thanks. Blessings, mommapbs |
