Greetings Thomas! John 8:30 says that 'many' believed. However, there is nothing in the text to indicate that the ones who wanted to kill Jesus in v. 37 are the ones who believed in v. 30. They would have been the ones who had not believed. Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |

Hi Tim, The reason I ask is that it looks like the 'they' of v 33 refers to those believers in v 30-32. It looks, to me, like the English means... Jesus said 'the truth shall make you free' and they answered 'we are not in bondage'. Do you see why I'm having the problem? |

Greetings Thomas! I understand what you are saying, but there is nothing in the text that indicates that those who believed are the ones who wanted to kill Him. In Greek, a verb itself has tense, voice, mood, person, and number included as part of it's form. In this case, the verb 'answered' is an Aorist, passive, indicative, 3rd person, plural verb. The context is general enough that the 'they' could just as easily, and even more likely would, refer to those who had not believed. I hope this helps! Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |
