1 | Jesus' brothers real motives? | John 7:4 | msbblc | 38183
In John 7:3-5 Jesus' brothers tell him he ought to go to Judea, so that his disciples may see the miracles he did, and also the world, as if he had not already been doing those things. I know it says that his bothers didn't believe in him, but it seems evident they knew of all the miracles he had performed and were surely aware of the fact he was staying away from Judea because the Jews there were waiting to take his life. Do you think they were testing him to somehow force him to prove to them in a greater way his deity? Thank you for your comments, Tom
2 | Jesus' brothers real motives? | John 7:4 | Makarios | 38184
Greetings msbblc! Here is a little commentary on the situation in John 7:4.. "7:4 It is not clear whether the brothers claimed some knowledge of Jesus' miracles that other people did not have or were suggesting that any claim to Messiahship must be decided in Jerusalem. Their advice was not given sincerely, for they did not yet believe in Jesus (v.5)." (1) "3-5: Jesus' brothers (see Matt. 13:55) challenge him to declare himself to the world of pilgrims at the feast; his claims (chs. 5 and 6) must be verified at Jerusalem." (2) "7:4 to be known openly ... show Yourself to the world. Jesus' brothers wanted Him to put on a display of His miracles. Although the text does not clearly state their motivation, perhaps they made the request for two reasons: 1) they wanted to see the miracles for themselves to determine their genuineness, and 2) they may have had similar crass political motives as the people, namely that He would become their social and political Messiah. Jerusalem's acceptance of Him was to be the acid test for them as to whether His own family would believe in Him as Messiah."
