2 | Can you lose your salvation? | John 5:24 | Hank | 187800
Dear Cheech - Welcome and thanks for your question. ...... The Bible teaches clearly that salvation is wholly of God, that man can neither save himself nor keep himself saved, and that this salvation is by grace through faith in Christ Jesus, not in any wise on the merit of man's works, but on the basis of the redemption of Christ, the merit of His shed blood. See John 1:12; Ephesians 1:4-7; 2:8-10; 1 Peter 1:18,19. ....... Moreover, the Bible teaches that the redeemed once saved are kept by God's power, thus being secure in Christ Jesus forever. The kind of life that God gives to regenerate believers in Christ is eternal life (John 3:16), which, by defintion, lasts forever. Here are some more Bible references for your study: John 5:24; 6:37-40; 10:27-30; Romans 5:9-10; 8:1, 31-39; 1 Corinthians 1:4-9; Ephesians 4:30; Hebrews 7:25; 13:5; 1 Peter 1:4,5; Jude 24. ....... This doctrine which I have described here in the briefest way possible is known as the 'eternal security of the believer.' Another name with a similiar meaning is 'the perseverence of the saints." But I would like to footnote here that this doctrine by no means permits the use of Christian liberty as an excuse for sinful living and carnality, for doing things which the Bible forbids. That is a false teaching called antinomianism, which is bereft of biblical support. Please see Romans 6:15-22; 13:13-14; Galatians 5:13-26; Titus 2:11-14. ...... Again, salvation is wholly of God. Man has no ability to save himself, neither can he keep himself saved by works or any other means within his power. --Hank
