1 | Why is Samaritan woman married? | John 4:27 | Rob.M | 49629
In the account of the Samaritan woman in John chapter 4, the Amplified Bible puts an interesting twist unlike other translations or versions. In verse 18 Jesus clearly states that the Samaritan woman was living with a man who was NOT her husband. Why then later in the chapter (verse 27) are the disciples astonished to see Him speaking with a married woman?
2 | Why is Samaritan woman married? | John 4:27 | Morant61 | 49630
Greetings Rob M.! Good question! This illustrates one of the things that I don't like about the amplified Bible. It tends to print out every possible meaning of a word, even if the context does not allow some of the meanings. The word used in John 4:27 is 'gune'. This word can refer to either a married or an unmarried woman. Context alone determines which is meant. In this case, clearly an unmarried woman is meant for several reasons. One, the text itself tells us that she was not currently married. Secondly, there isn't any kind of posessive pronoun, which would normally be the case if a married woman was being discussed. I hope this helps! Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |
