1 | Worship service or performance? | John 4:24 | ItsMe | 163261
Well you have stirred up some interersting comments. One girlfriend told me she agreed. They believe in quiet in worship. She's a Quaker. Another co-worker said they rarely applaud BUT they don't exhibit those emotions in other places either - because there is no "sanctuary" - except our bodies. In her church it is the auditorium. She attends a Church of Christ. My dear friend, from Jamaica said - (a very reserved person) - oh my goodness yes - clap - sing, shout joyfully when you worship Him. (I don't know her church affiliation). So - I'm thinking it is up to us to worship Him and that as long as it is worship - we can be moved in different ways. I agree that many churches seem to be doing anything and everything to get people inside. I saw on TV recently that one church actually had a Starbucks in the outside area before entering the sanctuary/auditorium. (we don't allow food or drink in our main area of worship). according to your scripture reference of john 4:24, I have always taken this to mean to be yourself before God.What I mean is, I close my eyes, and think of, or meditate on what God has done for me, and if tears come to my eyes, so be it. If I laugh, bow down, whatever,I believe it to be in spirit and truth.
4 | ItsMe, what's your definition of worship | John 4:24 | Searcher56 | 163276
The primary Greek word is proskuneo. It means to kiss the hand to (towards) one, in token of reverence. Westerns may not understand this. It is not a romantic or family kiss. I doubt many of us kiss with reverence, even if we kiss the ring of the Pope. There were ancients that kissed their idols. The primary Hebrew word, for "worship", shachah, is a powerful one. It describes the physical act of actually prostrating yourself on the floor before a sovereign, someone who has complete control over you. It is translated bow, homage, prostrate, worship, weighs it down or a similar words. Daniel wrote in Aramaic. The word he used, 12 times, is c@gid, pronounces segeed. It is translated to prostrate one-self, do homage, worship. It is related to the Hebrew cagad. I think in order to worship, we nned to prepare ourselves, like we would if we were going to see the President (or better the Queen, if we were Brits) ... we just can't go as we are when we worship ... then bow before the Almighty, who has absolute rule over us ... we should worship at the right time ... and any place He leads us. |
