1 | Jesus said in Jn 4:24. | John 4:24 | wleman | 148073
I have often wondered the same thing, as I have read this traditional translation wording. I think a big part of why we have difficulty understanding what this means is that the prepositional phrases "in truth" and "(in) spirit" are marginal English, that is, fluent English speakers to not normally use the words "truth" and "spirit" in such prepositional phrases. So we have difficulty understanding the meaning because the translation is not worded in a standard English way. I have always thought that by "worship in truth" what was probably meant is that we need to be honest (truthful) as we worship. But some exegetes believe that this verse refers to worshipping "according to the truth", that is, worshipping in a way that is in line with God's truth as explained in the Bible. There is even more difficulty trying to figure out what it means to worship "in spirit." A number of different possibilities have been suggested including: 1. Worship by means of the Holy Spirit. Some would contend that this would mean worshipping in a charismatic way, perhaps even speaking in tongues while worshipping. Or, at minimum, allowing the Holy Spirit to guide us as we worship. 2. Worship through our human spirits. This is another exegetical possiblity. We should not only worship God with our minds but also with our spirits. Our worship needs to come from the deepest parts of ourselves, from our very spirit. Then our worship can be "spiritual." I don't know if we can be certain of what this verse means. It helps to compare other English Bible versions to see what they suggest this verse means. This verse is a candidate for discussion on my new blog at Internet address: http://englishbibles.blogspot.com. I invite anyone to visit the blog and post questions and comments there. Blessings, in our wonderful Lord, Wayne |

2 | How to recognise worship in spirit | John 4:24 | drroychungath | 148128
Your Question How do we know what people do in worship are guided by the holy spirit. How can we choose fellowship, or what are the criterias that should guide us in selecting the spirit lead fellowship. Regarding your second point all, even nonchristians and traditional chrstians worship their Gods in body soul and spirit. So is their worship also in truth and spirit. |

3 | How to recognise worship in spirit | John 4:24 | EdB | 148142
Only God knows the heart of the true worshipper. However one of the gifts of the spirit is discernment. If you seek spiritual discernment and pray for it God will through His Holy Spirit give you such a gift. We also play a part we have to learn to use our minds and undertake critical thinking. Does the worship focus us on God or something else. Does the worship glorify God or something else. Much of today's worship is really self glorification. We sing about what we are going to do in Christ. Or our position, or the benefits of being a Christian instead of worshipping God. All said you will probably never know if someone is in fact worshipping correctly or not but that is not your concern. Your concern is to worship God in spirit and truth. You said all even nonchristians worship in body and soul. That is not true most worship in outward appearance only. However there are those that worship something other than the living God but you can determine that by listening to what their worshipping. EdB |

4 | How to recognise worship in spirit | John 4:24 | Ray | 148166
Hi EdB, Good post. You said however, "one of the gifts of the spirit is discernment." I see the Holy Spirit as the Giver of the gift of spirit or spiritual discernment. Just as the last sentence of your first paragraph says, the gift that we seek through His Holy Spirit is spiritual discernment. So I would say that one of the gifts of the Spirit is discernment. And for John 4:24, I still have penciled in my personal copy, "God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in Spirit and truth." We worship Him (Spirit) and are seeking to be filled with His spiritual words of truth. And verse 25 says that when that One comes, He will declare all things to us. From the heart, Ray |
