I think the word Christian implies the idea "Christ follower", but I don't think it's sufficient. If we look at what Jesus said to Nicodemus, we get a better picture. From this scripture, and others, I believe a Christian is someone who has allowed the Holy Spirit to come into his life and make him a different person. He has become "born again" (Jn.3:3) Jesus goes on to compare it with the wind. He says you can hear the wind, but you can't see it. You can't see the Spirit coming into someone's body, but you are going to notice it's effects. The Holy Spirit changes us. Near the end of the passage, Jesus says that men live in and love darkness. This is because we sin. Romans 3:23 says " for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God." We all sin, therefore we are all in darkness. Jesus came as a light (Jn.1:1-9). Men by nature hate the light (Jn.3:21). People don't come right out and say they hate Jesus, but that is what their deeds show. If we allow the Holy Spirit to change us, we can love the light. To love Jesus is to obey Him. Jn. 14:21-26 talks about how obedience is equated with love. It also talks about the Holy Spirit coming and helping us to be obedient. That is what happens when you're born again. The Holy Spirit comes to you and helps you to be obedient to Jesus instead of your own desires. I like the way Kieth Green, a Christian musician who is now with the Lord put it; "A Christian is someone who is bananas for Jesus" In other words, you're totally crazy about Jesus; about loving Him, and serving Him and following Him. | ||||||
