Titus 3:5 He saved us, not on the basis of deeds which we have done in righteousness, but according to His mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewing by the Holy Spirit, I'd like some more information on regeneration. Seems to be two schools of thought on it. Some say regeneration is the same as being born again or converted. (According to this model, I guess you could alternately say that regeneration happens at the same time as conversion.) Others say that it is a seperate step, i.e., you are regenerated BEFORE you have faith. I did some searching last night and it seems the only place in the Bible that uses the word regeneration is Titus 3:5, and that is only in the KJV, and NASB, but not the NIV. (I only have those three versions at home.) NIV uses the term "washing of rebirth". Is regeneration the same or different from the new birth talked about in Eze. 36:26,John 1:13, John 3:3, II Cor. 5:17, I Pet 1:23, I John 5:1? In some ways I feel like I'm splitting hairs here, but resolving this will help solve some related questions for me. Thanks! |

THE FALLING AWAY HAS ALREADY HAPPENED IN AMERICA AND THE REST OF THE WORLD. JUST CONCENTRATE ON YOUR OWN SALVATION. God bless |

Regeneration - only found in Matt. 19:28 and Titus 3:5. This word literally means a "new birth." The Greek word so rendered (palingenesia) is used by classical writers with reference to the changes produced by the return of spring. In Matt. 19:28 the word is equivalent to the "restitution of all things" (Acts 3:21). In Titus 3:5 it denotes that change of heart elsewhere spoken of as a passing from death to life (1 John 3:14); becoming a new creature in Christ Jesus (2 Cor. 5:17); being born again (John 3:5); a renewal of the mind (Rom. 12:2); a resurrection from the dead (Eph. 2:6); a being quickened (2:1, 5). This change is ascribed to the Holy Spirit. It originates not with man but with God (John 1:12, 13; 1 John 2:29; 5:1, 4). As to the nature of the change, it consists in the implanting of a new principle or disposition in the soul; the impartation of spiritual life to those who are by nature "dead in trespasses and sins." The necessity of such a change is emphatically affirmed in Scripture (John 3:3; Rom. 7:18; 8:7-9; 1 Cor. 2:14; Eph. 2:1; 4:21-24). (Easton's) John Reformed |

[As to the nature of the change, it consists in the implanting of a new principle or disposition in the soul; the impartation of spiritual life to those who are by nature "dead in trespasses and sins."] The word "impartation" implies a gradual process. It would be supposed that we have something to with that process of regeneration, don't you think? Not unto justification but unto sanctification, innocence to purity. |

Impart 1. To bestow a share or portion of; to give, grant, or communicate; to allow another to partake in; as, to impart food to the poor; the sun imparts warmth. If I impart information to you, you recieve it immediately. Of course it may take some time to digest. The natural man does not recieve spiritual things (1 Cor 2:14). Therefore, regeneration must occur prior to recieving. Regeneration is a function of God's soveriegn will and according to His good pleasure (Is 46:10). Once a person has been born again, the eyes, ears, and will are alive to spiritual truth. This person has been freed from the captivity of Satan who has controlled him up until this miracle of Go has set him free. It is at this point that he is able to desire Christ and to freely worship Him as his God and Saviour (Ezek 36:26). We do have a part in sanctification, but even then we are dependent on grace to do that which pleases God. We strive to be holy, but even our striving is Christ working on us through His Spirit (Eph 2:10). Life is not about us. It is about God. He created us for His purpose which was to glorify Himself. Humbling, is'nt it? It should cause us to fall on our faces in sheer gratitude for His having chosen such miserable specimens as ourselves. Is 43:6-8 "I will say to the north, 'Give them up!' And to the south, 'Do not hold them back.' Bring My sons from afar And My daughters from the ends of the earth, Everyone who is called by My name, And whom I have created for My glory, Whom I have formed, even whom I have made. Bring out the people who are blind, even though they have eyes, And the deaf, even though they have ears." God Bless, John |
