Hi, Val... Did you know that the inductive approach is not new? I was looking through my notes for a quote by John Wyclif (1330-1384) to that effect, but I can't seem to put my finger on it. However, here's one from 1535. "Again, it shall greatly help thee to understand scripture, if thou mark not only what is spoken or written, but of whom, and unto whom, with what words, at what time, where, to what intent, with what circumstance, considering what goeth before, and what followeth after. For there be some things which are done and written, to the intent that we should do likewise: as when Abraham believeth God, is obedient unto his word, and defendeth Lot his kinsman from violent wrong. There be some things also which are written, to the intent that we should eschew such like. As when David lieth with Urias' wife, and causeth him to be slain. Therefore (I say) when thou readest scripture, be wise and circumspect: and when thou commest to such strange manners of speaking and dark sentences, to such parables and similitudes, to such dreams or visions as are hid from thy understanding, commit them unto God or to the gift of his holy spirit in them that are better learned than thou." --Miles Coverdale In Him, Doc PS I have the particular Bible of which you speak. |

Merry Christmas Doc, Hope you are enjoying the day. Your research is very valuable and I appreciate you. I bet you have a large library of books. I love books as well. Its amazing how we accumulate more than we have time to read. I have recently purchased some christian biographies and they are wonderful testimonies of God's work in the missionaries lives. The inductive bible is my favorite bible. I am not surprised that you have it. I know you love books as well. Miles Coverdale and John Wyclif would be fascinating to read I am sure. As we celebrate our Lord's birth today and every day of the year - peace on earth, good will to men - we share this peace that only our Lord can give. It has been a pleasure to meet you and each day Lord willing may our prayer be to know Him. I know it is yours and mine as well. Merry Christmas Doc!!! | ||||||

Thank you, Val... Reading how the Holy Spirit has moved in the lives of men and women down through the centuries is both instructive and encouraging. You might enjoy the relatively brief summaries of great Christians from John Piper: http://www.desiringgod.org/ResourceLibrary/Biographies/ I keep my computer and cell phone loaded down with MP3s of lectures and sermons. It is handy to take advantage of the research of others into the lives of the saints. You can cover a bit more ground in a shorter period of time... for tempus fugit! Thank you for your encouragement. I pray daily to experientially walk out Mark 12:30. Oh to be consumed utterly -- cognitively, intentionally, emotionally -- with the love of God! If God places you on my mind, pray for His grace in my life in that respect, to His glory alone. For which thing, I would be grateful. ...and I hope and pray that your Christmas has been a blessed one as well. In Him, Doc |
