It seems to me that John Chapter 21 describes anger, love, and healing. Does anyone else see this?
2 | What are the dynamics within Jn 21? | John 21:12 | Hank | 53688
John_ Isn't John 21 a wonderful chapter? I don't see much anger in it, although love and restoration are there. Verse 12 stands out to me: Jesus said, "Come and eat breakfast." What a wonderful way for the disciples to start their day -- breakfast with the Lord Jesus! What a wonderful way for us to start our day -- in prayer and meditation: having breakfast with Jesus..... The second thing that strikes me as truly outstanding about this concluding chapter of John's Gospel is the discourse between Jesus and Peter in verses 15-19. It will be remembered that Peter denied Jesus three times before the crucifixion. So here the Lord asks Peter three times, "Do you love me?" Peter answers in the affirmative three times, and after each of Peter's answers the Lord says in turn, "Feed My lambs, Tend My sheep, Feed My sheep." The lesson is clear. The extent and nature of our love for the Lord is measured by our ministry, by the work that we do in feeding and tending to the Lord's sheep. That could be the fellow sitting next to us in the church pew or the derelict on skid row. --Hank
3 | What are the dynamics within Jn 21? | John 21:12 | john_ | 53740
Look at the dynamics within John Chapter 21: The apostles had been together in a house behind locked doors for several weeks from fear of the Jews (John 20:19, 20:26). The only safe time for them to leave during that time was in the cover of darkness. In John 21 Jesus appeared again to seven of his disciples by the Sea of Tiberias. Peter declares he's going to go fishing. Six other disciples say they'll go with him. That night they caught nothing. Early in the morning, Jesus called to them from shore and and none of them recognized his voice. It was after Jesus directed them to throw out their net and they caught so many fish that seven men couldn't haul the net in that one disciple (not Peter) recognized it was Jesus and told Peter "It is the Lord!" Peter loved Jesus and knew him well, but once again, he didn't recognize His voice. Peter's only response was to gird himself and jump into the water, in silence. The disciples were a distance of about 100 yards off shore. None of them could see who Jesus was, yet Peter left the boat in the dark. The other six disciples brought the boat and the loaded net to shore. Jesus says to them (the six in the boat, Peter is with Jesus) to bring some of the fish they have just caught, but Peter goes to the boat and drags the loaded net ashore by himself. The other disciples are still with the boat. Seven men couldn't haul the loaded net into the boat on the water, but Peter drags it ashore by himself, and the net didn't rip. It seems that Peter didn't want the others to help him. After Peter does this, Jesus asked the other six to come and have breakfast, but although they couldn't see him, they knew who he was. Jesus came to them and brought them bread and fish and they ate. John mentions that this is the third time Jesus appeared to his disciples after he was raised from the dead. After eating, Jesus took Peter for a walk and talked with him. He asked Peter if he loved him three times, and each time Peter said he did. But Peter had a problem with one of the disciples - the one that Jesus loved - and asked Jesus about him. Peter said "Lord, what about him?" Jesus essentially says, what is that to you? You must follow me. It seems to me that Peter is dealing with great anger over one disciple, and then the other five, and Jesus is there helping Peter through it. Jesus never gave up on Peter, or anyone else. The Apostles of Jesus had been in the darkness since the Passover meal. This chapter describes to me the specific time that they emerged from the darkness back into the light. |
