1 | Why the angels? | John 1:51 | prayon | 8263
The ladder pictured here is Jacob's ladder also mentioned in Gen 28:12. The ladder is symbolic of the way for us to get to heaven - through Jesus Christ. My question is why were the angels ascending and descending?

Dear Prayon, I'm hoping you get a lot of responses to this one. Mine must be brief. I've always felt like Jacob got it wrong about this vision, when he said "Surely the Lord is in this place, and I did not know it." His life might have turned out differently if he had realized, "The Lord is every place, and I didn't know it." But there is a message he could have gotten out of that, for to my knowledge he never sought help from an idol. The message was, even though God is in all places, there is only one way to Him, and that way is an active connection between Heaven and Earth. Jesus says, I am that connection. I'd give anything if someone out there can tell me if the Talmuds comment on what the BC teachers were saying about that ladder, for to put Himself in the place of that ladder must have had great significance to Phillip. Oops! I didn't answer your question: why were the angels ascending and descending? Angels brought answer to prayer, prophetic words, correction and direction in times past. I think it's safe to say those are when angels are descending. And I guess they would go back (ascending) after their job was done. What's most interesting is, what ever we ask in Jesus Name, the Father will do. It seems that says the request and the answer comes through (or in ladder language, up and down) Him. mrk |

3 | Why the angels? | John 1:51 | Makarios | 8297
Excellent question with a profound answer! Zondervan's NIV Study Bible suggests, "As in Jacob's dream (Gen. 28:12), thus marking Jesus as God's elect one through whom redemption comes to the world- perhaps identifying Jesus as 'the' true Israelite (see v. 47)." In Genesis 28:12 it states, "Jesus Himself is the bridge between heaven and earth (John 14:6), the only "mediator ... between God and men" (1 Tim. 2:5)." Nelson's NKJV Study Bible mentions, "The thought here is similar [comparing John 1:51 with Gen. 28:12], namely that there will be communication between heaven and earth." Ryrie's Study Bible offers, "A symbol of the fellowship open to followers of Christ." And for Genesis 28:12, "'ladder.' more like a stairway." The MacArthur Study Bible adds, "Jesus' point to Nathanael was that just like Jacob experienced supernatural or heaven-sent revelation, Nathanael and the other disciples would experience supernatural communication confirming who Jesus was. Moreover, the term "Son of Man" replaced the ladder in Jacob's dream, signifying that Jesus was the means of access between God and man." I personally interpret this 'ascending and descending' to be another reference to the Diety of Jesus as God Himself! But the Bible mentions ladders (Gen. 28:12) and stairways (1 Kings 6:8)and wardrobes (2 Kings 22:14, 2 Chr. 34:22) in interesting places.. :) |
