Greetings 00123, You ask, "Why did Jesus ask John to care of Mary? What happened to Mary's other children? Caring mother is own children's responsibility, isn't it?" John's Gospel alone describes the scene in which Jesus, while dying on the cross, commits His mother to the care of the beloved disciple (verses 26-27). Perhaps this is more of a reflection of a later tradition that holds that Mary and John both lived in the city of Ephesus until their deaths. But in Acts 1:14, Mary is back with her sons rather than John, and we would expect that the brothers of Jesus would have accepted their filial responsibility to care for their mother after the death of her firstborn. However, from a larger perspective of the church, it could also be said that John is less concerned about the historical relationships as he is in this remembrance than to provide an example of Jesus, from the cross, a symbol of what would be the new community of the church, brought into existence through the death and resurrection of the Lord (see Mark 3:33-35 and Acts 2:41-47). Blessings to you, Makarios |
