1 | John 17:2 Use of third person? | John 17:2 | pkbldr | 216108 | ||
First, I am thankful to find such a forum as this, where God's word is held in it's proper regard. I firmly believe that comparing scripture with scripture is the single best method of Bible interpretation, but this one has me stumped. In my studies in John, I don't find the significance of the use of the third person, in this and related verses, by Jesus. "As thou hast given him power over all flesh, that he should give eternal life to as many as thou hast given him." Is there a significance or is it a peculiarity of the translation? Thanks for your input. |

Dear pkbldr, Welcome to the forum. This is a good question. I cannot say I can provide you a solid answer; however, interesting that last week I was preparing a bible study for my youth group on John 3:14-21. During my research, some studies show that v16-21 could not have been spoken by Jesus but a further elaboration by John. The conversation between Jesus and Nicodemus seemingly ended in v15 as we can see from the syntax and the context of the preceding chapters. Therefore, this could be John's writing style to "insert" some of his Holy Spirit inspired elaboration in between and chapter 17:2-3 could be the same case as in chapter 3:16-21. Which means that Jesus prayer is from Chapter 17:1, 17:3- onward. Again, I cannot be dogmatic on this but just my 2 cents. There maybe others who are more well-versed and knowledged to give you a better and satisfactory answer :-) Shalom Azure |
