Hi, Robert... John 17 is our Lord's High Priestly prayer for all of those who belong to Him from the far past on through to the consummation of His Kingdom on earth. It is thought that in John 13, Christ is speaking to His disciples as they walked out of the temple. It is thought that John 15 was when they were walking through a gate on which grape vines were carved in bas relief by Herod. They would walk out of Jerusalem through the Kidron Valley and up to the Garden of Gethsemane. It was in the evening, and the sacrifices in the Temple were being made so that the waters were stained scarlet. Many of the Jews had come from afar and were camped out in the valley. As the night darkened, I often imagine that the tents of the travelers were glowing from the olive oil lamps they had with them. Then, in Gethsemane our Lord knelt and prayed the prayer that we have in chapter 17. He prays for the glorification of the Father and the Son. Sometimes this prayer is called the Great Intercessory Prayer. Read it through -- in its entirety -- and see how He prays for His church.
