1 | Is there intelligent life on earth? | John 17:17 | DocTrinsograce | 142915
Oh my goodness... I've never seen anything as utterly dumb as this. Zondervan has a new paraphrase. And I thought all the other paraphrases were dumb! It is called "The Word on the Street." Look how Genesis 2:23-24 is "paraphrased" “Whoa! Now we’re talking!” says Adam. “She’s like me . . . only not. Same bones, same skin, same shape . . . only not. She’s . . . uh . . . sexy. If I’m ‘man’, she’s . . . uh . . . ‘woman’.” (eyes cast heavenward) |

2 | Is there intelligent life on earth? | John 17:17 | Just Read Mark | 142951
How about the Message? Sometimes the religious language of the Bible stunts our ability to aprehend for our whole lives. I think the Message is very good, even taking into account the original languages. My respect for the message jumped up a few notches when studying Isaiah. The traditional rendering of Isaiah 28:10 goes like this: "For precept must be upon precept, precept upon precept, Line upon line, line upon line, Here a little, there a little." But the commentary I was reading acknowledged that we really don't know what this passage means, and that the traditional rendering is on loose ground. The commentary then mentioned that many scholars think the text is not actually a sentence at all, but an immitation of baby sounds..... OK, now look at the message: "Da, da, da, da, blah, blah, blah, blah. That's a good little girl, that's a good little boy.'" So, Eugene Peterson is not only sassy, he's done his research. Paraphrases, done well, have an important but subserviant relation to the Real Thing. JRM |

Hi JRM, Without attempting to argue this point, I can accept and appreciate your comments:-) However, I'm not in favor of most paraphrases- especially The Message. I think is plays too fast and loose with Gods' Word. Is not Hebrews 4:12 sufficient: "For the word of God is living and active and sharper than any two-edged sword, and piercing as far as the division of soul and spirit, of both joints and marrow, and able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart." While there is a sense in which paraphrases may have an important and subserviant role, my concern is echoed that the "problem" is really with the individual and culture that seems unable to read serious literature and comprehend it. IMO, It is more a matter of finding a marketing niche and filling it than offering a necessary and valuable text. Not all may agree, but... Speaking the Truth in Love, BradK |

Hi Brad, I read something the other day that stuck with me. Something to the effect of: "Let's adjust our standards upward towards the written Word of God, not pull the Word down to our levels of illiteracy." There seems to me to be a certain lack of reverance for God's Word among certain publishing companies, who are more concerned with getting the "latest edition of the Eternal Word" onto the streets, and into their coffers. Anyway, you can't accuse Paul of "dumbing down" the gospel! :-) Love in Christ, Mark |
