1 | Why did Jesus need to leave first? | John 16:7 | DocTrinsograce | 215784
Hi, MJH... The work of the Son accomplished on the cross is an essential component of God's eternal purpose. Double imputation -- as a completed work -- paves the way for establishment of the church -- the Body of Christ. I've often thought how odd it is when people say, "Oh, if only I could have sat at Jesus' feet! The disciples didn't know how good they had it!" Such an attitude reveals a substantial misunderstanding of what was accomplished on the cross. A believer today -- through the second Comforter -- enjoys an intimacy with Christ that the disciples never experienced while our Lord walked upon the earth. The blessings of the ordo salutis, as revealed in Scripture, are necessarily and logically connected. These doctrines are foundational. In Him, Doc |

2 | Why did Jesus need to leave first? | John 16:7 | MJH | 215799
Thanks Doc. It's good to hear from you again. In light of the question then, Jesus needed to bodily ascend before the Spirit could come because we are His body, the Church? I understand the Theology of Christ's finished work as our only means of redemption, and I know that as he said, he needed to leave before the counselor could come, but I just can't quite put into words why the Spirit (who was present with Him at baptism for sure) could not come upon the disciples before he left them. If I understand Jesus words right, if he stayed through Pentecost, then the Spirit wouldn't have come. But why? What did the ascension do that wasn't already done? I'd look this up in some books for the thoughts of commentaries, but I am absent from them at this time. Thanks, MJH |

3 | Why did Jesus need to leave first? | John 16:7 | DocTrinsograce | 215800
Hi, MJH... Think about the context of the statement of Christ in John 16:7. When did He make it; i.e., at what point in His ministry? What was yet to be accomplished? To whom was He speaking? Why was this instruction going to be important to them? What would be their roles? Where would Christ go at the Ascension? What role would Christ assume after the Ascension? What must first occur for the Holy Spirit to seal a believer? Perhaps, if you ask the right questions as you study the Word -- in context and in the light of the rest of the Scriptures -- you will answer your own question. In Him, Doc |
