1 | One God- Three manifestations | John 14:5 | bob r. | 47089 | ||
GK 13 Your question on who to direct your prayers to was interseting. I feel a lot of people are confused in this regard. First let me say that there is only one God. God is all powerfull. He can do anything. If God wanted to appear to you in the form of a raven, He could. Then you would be right to say that that raven was God. Instead God chose to reveal Himself in three distinct forms,Father,Son, and Spirit. It's all the same God though. It's kind of like if you hired me to put a new roof on your house last year. I was a roofer. If you hire me this year to do some plumbing, I'm a plumber. I'm still the same man but working in a different capacity. Likewise God has chosen three ways to manifest Himself to mankind. Remember that God is everywhere, so He can be God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit all at the same time. In John 14:23 Christ says,"If a man love me, he will keep my words: and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him." Now we know as Christians that the Holy Spirit abides in us, yet in this verse He doesn't even mention the Holy Spirit. Why? Because all are one and the same. Today God reveals Himself through His Holy Spirit. But it was necessary for God to come in the form of flesh and blood to offer Himself as a sacrifice for our sins. When we pray, we pray in Jesus name to aknowledge what God accompished for us on the cross. The Father represents the totallity of the Godhead. As flesh and blood Christ was limited in that He could only be in one place at a time. Hence the Holy Spirit so that God can have a personal relationship with each of us. In each case it is the same God. In John 14:28 Christ says,"....the Father who is greater than I." This might confuse you. Christ, in the form of flesh and blood experienced hunger Luke 4:2, He got tired John 4:6, He thirsted John 19:28 etc. God is a Spirit John 4:24. As spirit God would not experience any of these things. Becomming flesh and blood God limits Himself to the limitations of flesh and blood. We see where Christ often prayed to the Father, but let us not forget that Christ also served as an example for us in how to behave. bob r. |

Hello bob r. Father, Son, and Holy Spirit are NOT one and the same. They are co-equal and eternal persons of the Godhead. Modalism was debunked as heresy over 1500 years ago. Steve |

steve, While I respect your oppinion, I cannot agree with you. If you could quote the bible for me it would give me something to consider other than your opinion or the opinion of others. I hope that I have a teachable heart. I've prayed for one. My faith is based on the bible only. When it comes to opinion, if that opinion is not supported by the bible it carries little weight with me. Let us not forget that 1500 years ago when Constantine legalised Christianity he was replacing a polytheistic religion. Replacing many gods with one may have been a little difficult with society. To replace these many gods he came up with the trinity idea as well as the idea of praying to saints. I can find nowhere in the bible where anyone other than God should be prayed to, that is Father, Son, or Holy Spirit. By the way, any religeous leaders of the day who failed to go along with this were threatened with exile, and some were exiled for their stand. Respecfully, bob r |

Hello bob r. OK, let's stick to Scripture. That's proper. Neither of us disagrees with the divinity of Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, only on whether these are three persons or one person representing Himself in different ways. Let's look at the OT. 1. Each of the following has the Lord God speaking and using both plural and singular pronouns of Himself. Genesis 1:26-27 (ESV) Then God said, "Let us make man in our image, after our likeness…" So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them. Genesis 3:22-24 (ESV) Then the Lord God said, "Behold, the man has become like one of us in knowing good and evil…." therefore the Lord God sent him out from the garden… He drove out the man. Isaiah 6:8 (ESV) And I heard the voice of the Lord saying, "Whom shall I send, and who will go for us?" ----------------- 2. There are Scriptures that have God referring to another as God or Lord. Psalm 45:6-7 (ESV) Your throne, O God, is forever and ever. The scepter of your kingdom is a scepter of uprightness; [7] you have loved righteousness and hated wickedness. Therefore God, your God, has anointed you with the oil of gladness beyond your companions. Psalm 110:1 (ESV) The Lord says to my Lord: "Sit at my right hand, until I make your enemies your footstool." Malachi 3:1 (ESV) "Behold, I send my messenger and he will prepare the way before me. And the Lord whom you seek will suddenly come to his temple; and the messenger of the covenant in whom you delight, behold, he is coming, says the Lord of hosts. Hosea 1:7 (ESV) But I will have mercy on the house of Judah, and I will save them by the Lord their God. I will not save them by bow or by sword or by war or by horses or by horsemen." ----------------- 3. The Holy Spirit is spoken of as distinct from God. Isaiah 48:16 (ESV) Draw near to me, hear this: from the beginning I have not spoken in secret, from the time it came to be I have been there." And now the Lord God has sent me, and his Spirit. Isaiah 61:1 (ESV) The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me, because the Lord has anointed me to bring good news to the poor; he has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to those who are bound; Isaiah 63:10 (ESV) But they rebelled and grieved his Holy Spirit; therefore he turned to be their enemy, and himself fought against them. ----------------- 4. An angel is a messenger of God, therefore distinct from God. Yet the Angel of the Lord is called God. Genesis 16:13; Exodus 3:2-6; 23:20-22; Numbers 22:35,38; Judges 2:1-2; 6:11,14) ----------------- These may not prove conclusive to you. If you want to discuss NT proofs or other pertinent items, I'd be happy to oblige. Steve |
