Mommapbs In Jewish culture when a young couple got married they usually lived with the grooms family. Traditionally what was done would be the young man upon getting engaged would return to his home and along with his father being construction of the addition to the family home that would be the apartment for the young couple. These additions were added in such a way that eventually the building would surround a courtyard. In the courtyard common family functions would take place such meal preparation, the eating of the meal, family socialization and etc. While the groom was building the addition the bride would work on her wedding ensemble, her dress, arranging for brides maids, her dowry and etc. During this time the Bride and Groom rarely if ever saw each other but usually kept in touch by messengers. When the bridal chamber was complete the groom would set off to collect his bride. He would send his best man ahead to alert the bride that the groom approaches. She would gather her wedding party and make ready for the wedding. The groom traveling through the streets of the town would gather the wedding party and like a parade they would come to the Bride and carry her off to her wedding and the place he had prepared for her. The big event included a wedding banquet that many times lasted days. The bride and groom would consummate the wedding and they would live there raising their children who would one day add more apartments to the family home for their brides. Jesus words would paint this beautiful picture of a common Jewish engagement and wedding to his disciples reassuring them of His love for them and of His return. His words would say I (the Groom) leave you (my engaged Bride) now to go to My Father’s house to prepare a place for you, there exist many apartments there and I make them ready to receive you. One day soon I will return claim My bride and carry her to My Father’s house where We will dine at the Marriage supper of the Lamb and we will be with our Groom for all eternity. Even now I believe that as a believers passes from our presence into the presence of the Lord, the Groom our Lord Jesus is there to draw them to Him as they wait the time when the rest of us are called home, before we all dine at the Marriage supper of the Lamb Rev 19:7-10 Facts about Jewish engagement and wedding can be found in The New Manners and Customs of Bible Times, Grower Publishing; Manners and Customs in the Bible, Harvert house Publishing; The Life and Times of Jesus the Messiah, Macdonald Publishing; Today’s Handbook of Bible Times and Customs, Bethany House publishing; and Archaeology of the Jerusalem Area, Baker Publishing EdB |

EdB, what source did you use for this? I'm guessing Alfred Edersheim, "The Life and Times of Jesus the Messiah". Colin |

Colin I listed my major sources at the end of my post. I did gleen a lot of information from Edersheim's work but I also think The New Manners and Customs of Bible Times, by Moody press which I inadvertantly forgot to list played a major role also. Sorry for this omission. EdB |
