Searcher, If your point about Thursday Nisan 14 being the day the passover lamb was slaughtered is correct, then consider: Mark, Luke and John indicate Jesus died on the "day of preparation" for the sabbath which is Friday. See also Mark 15:42, Luke 23:54-56, John 19:31, 40-42. Matthew calls the next day after the crucifixion, "the day following the preparation day." Matt 28:59-66. The three days can be counted as Friday, Jesus is laid in the tomb, Saturday, and Sunday, the third day on which He rose. John 12: Six days before the passover, Jesus came to Bethany and they gave a dinner. ... on the next day he entered Jerusalem (Palm Sunday?). Thursday evening Jesus celebrates the Last Supper and institutes the Eucharist, our Passover (the Lamb of God) in which we eat his body and blood, which he promised in John 6, also mentioned in 1 Cor. 10:16; 11:24-26. On Friday the day of preparation for the Sabbath He was crucified. Luke is clear that the Last Supper was celebrated on the evening of Thursday "the day for sacrificing the Passover lamb." Luke 22:7, see also Mark 14:12-18 which mentions the day on which "preparations' were made for Passover (v15-16), which is different from the day of preparation for the sabbath in Mark 16:42 even if you consider passover a Sabbath. It would be hard to place the celebration of the Pasover Last Supper on the evening of the day your Jesus was crucified according to the gospels. When taking into consideration the opinions of Messianic Jews, I prefer to relie on the Messianic Jews who wrote the Gospels and who were the eye witnesses from whom Luke received his information. Emmaus Read John 19:14 it was the preparation day for the Passover Sabbath not the weekly Sabbath. this subject has been discussed at length in many threads. Do a search for ID# 1293, read through the thread and notice where the answer was investigated by going to a Messanic Jew for his opinion at ID # 8230. Hope this all helps! Unless you have another point of information then all we are doing is replowing the field. EdB |

Ed, I have read John 19:14 and the Synoptics which make the point of the other position as I have cited. You may find this article on the subject of interest. It was published in 1912 and the issue was not new then. Nor is the day of the week of the crucifixion a point of doctrine, although it is a matter of interpretation. The article has some relevent points I did not see in the archives to which you refered me, but in some ways touch on various points there. Your previous point about the importance of Jesus's death as opposed to the day of his death of course is very much to the point in this academic exercise. http://www.newadvent.org/cathen/14341a.htm Emmaus |

Emmaus Interesting! Consider this Jesus was the fulfillment of the Old Testament prophecies, He fulfilled every spring feast. How is that the Lamb of God would miss fulfilling the Passover by dying a day late? The gospels fit together they do not dispute each other. The other gospels talk about the coming Sabbath John spells out which Sabbath that is the Great Sabbath, the Passover Sabbath. There is only one "great" Sabbath in Jewish culture and that is the Passover Sabbath. The flow of Passover was the selection of the Lamb on Nissan the 10th (Palm Sunday see Jesus' timing was right here) and killing of the Lamb on Nissan the 14th (After the 9 th hour but before the actual sundown since that would now be a Sabbath.) and Passover dinner eaten on evening of the Nissan the 15 th. Remember Jewish days began at sundown and go through the night then the day until sundown the next. The Passover Lamb was to be killed at sundown (after the 9th hour but before actual sundown) on the 14th day exactly when Jesus died on the cross. The next day would be the Passover Sabbath and the following day would be the weekly Sabbath so the first chance the women had to come to the grave would be Sunday. I have explained it every way I can think of if you want to go with the golden tongue wordsmiths of the article ( they need to study Jewish culture) you referred me too that's okay! As long as we agree Jesus was crucified, died, was buried, rose three days later and now sits at the right hand of God the Father. Have a blessed Resurrection Morning!!!!!! EdB |
