1 | Dead bury the dead? | Luke 9:60 | adnama | 170419
What did Jesus mean when he said "Let the dead bury their own dead?" I understand it was more important to follow Him, but how can the dead actually bury the dead?
2 | Dead bury the dead? | Luke 9:60 | Hank | 170422
adnama: Thanks for the question. It is commonly believed by a number of expositors of this verse (Luke 9:60; see also Matthew 8:22) that Jesus' reference is to let the spiritually dead bury the physically dead, "but you (reference is to His followers) go and preach the kingdom of God." It is His rebuke of the double-mindedness of the man in verse 59, who heard Christ's call but wanted to take care of personal concerns first. The application is obvious: put Christ first. "Seek ye first the kingdom of God..." (See Matthew 6:33). --Hank
3 | Dead bury the dead? | Luke 9:60 | adnama | 170441
Thanks Hank. Would that mean that Jesus knew the man was "spiritually dead" because he made the request? I mean, he DID want to follow Him. And since he said to let the spiritually dead bury the man's father, would that mean that Jesus "knew" (could see into the hearts) of those left to to do the burying, even though He never knew them? Please forgive if I sound dumb; I just want to fully understand. Adnama
4 | Dead bury the dead? | Luke 9:60 | Hank | 170446
Adnama: If you are asking, as I presume, whether the Incarnate Jesus knew the thoughts of men, the answer is yes. For examples, please refer to Matthew 9:4; Luke 11:17; Mark 12:15; John 18:4. --Hank
