1 | Why does he fall asleep at church? | Luke 8:15 | mom7x | 153469
I believe he could be right, that it could be the devil fighting him to try to stop his growth. All you can do is pray for him, for protection against the schemes of the devil. Feeding himn peppermints, or hot cinnamon candies might help too. What HE can do is another matter. He can put on the armor of God, (Ephesians 6:11-17)he can get up and walk around in the back of the church so he can still hear what is going on--he can choose to resist the devil(James 4:7) I guess it all depends how important it is to him. Hope this helps! |

2 | Why does he fall asleep at church? | Luke 8:15 | DocTrinsograce | 153472
Dear Mom, He'll have just as much trouble with those things. For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other: so that ye cannot do the things that ye would. (Galatians 5:17) An incorrect diagnosis will always result in the wrong medication being applied. This man doesn't need an exorcism, he needs heart surgery. He needs to turn off his television, go to bed early. Follow that with a strong cup of coffee on Sunday morning and take notes during the sermon and the his other classes. He can show the notes to a godly oler friend who can be mentoring him. The flesh would love for him to be blaming the devil... so would the devil! In Him, Doc |

3 | Why does he fall asleep at church? | Luke 8:15 | mom7x | 153476
I would agree with this except for the fact that he doesn't have problems falling asleep at any other time. Of course the flesh has something to do with it too, but Satan's greatest joy is to keep us from God...having had a problem with this very issue myself, and having overcome it, all I can say is that it has worked for me. Getting enough sleep is of course a given-I guess I see that as obvious. But when you do everything you can to solve the problem, I see it as spiritual warfare-not that we blame the devil for everything we do wrong, but that we recognize that he does have an influence on our lives when we don't use the ways God has given us to fight back. |

Dear Mom, Sometimes people need to be reminded of the obvious. I know that I do! We are, I believe, making the assumption that this sleepy fellow is a believer. Any discussion would be pointless without that assumption, as we expect a non-believer to have little interest in the the things of God. (That written, if I were this man, I would be quite concerned that I was indeed a saved (Phi 2:12).) There are three enemies of the believer: "Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world [enemy 1], according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience [enemy 2]: Among whom also we all had our conversation in times past in the lusts of our flesh [enemy 3], fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind; and were by nature the children of wrath, even as others." (Ephesians 2:2-3) The world is the social order of men, their ideas, and their philosophies (Col 2:8) -- it seeks to promote disobedience. The devil is a spirit being by which mean Satan and his fallen angels (Revelation 12:9) -- who fathers deception. The flesh is not our bodies, but that part of us that resists the enthronement of God and would place us in control (Romans 7:18, 25). It would be instructive for you to demonstrate from the Bible that believers can be put to sleep by demonic activity. Indeed, I can find no where in Scripture where the devil puts anyone to sleep. However, I do find where the flesh puts people to sleep, especially at times when they ought to be doing otherwise: "And he cometh unto the disciples, and findeth them asleep, and saith unto Peter, 'What, could ye not watch with me one hour? Watch and pray, that ye enter not into temptation: the spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.'" (Matthew 26:40-41) Note that Christ did *not* say, "Watch and pray, that ye enter not into temptation: because the devil is making you fall asleep." He places the blame directly on the flesh, not the devil. The Scripture says that we are to be diligent (2 Peter 3:14), sober minded (1 Peter 1:13), vigilant (1 Peter 5:8), mortifiers of the deeds of the flesh (Col 3:5), watchful (Mat 24:42), persistent (Heb 12:1), etc. The flesh would have us do as this sleepy man; i.e., place such little value on the things of God that we find it boring and un-exciting. "Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us, Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith... lift up the hands which hang down, and the feeble knees; and make straight paths for your feet, lest that which is lame be turned out of the way; but let it rather be healed." (Hebrews 12:1, 2a, 12, 13) In closing, Mom, in the forum we appreciate experiences insofar as they relate to or have light shed upon them *from* the Scriptures. However, we are very much less interested in using experiences as a means of demonstrating a Scriptural perspective. With all due respect and deference to you, ma'am, it is a Study Bible Forum rather than a Study Experience Forum. In Him, Doc "[Since] there is such a law [of indwelling-sin] in Christians, then it is our duty to find it out, as if a fire were in our home. Our earnestness for grace, our watchfulness, and our diligent obedience depends upon this discovery. Upon this one hinge the whole course of our lives will turn. Ignorance of it breeds senselessness, carelessness, sloth, self-sufficiency, and pride -- all of which the Lord's soul abhors. Eruptions into great, open, conscience-wasting, and scandalous sins are the result of a lack of due consideration of this basic law of indwelling sin." --John Owen (1616-1683) |
