Hi, Restored... I'd teach the Gospel. If people have so much trouble parting with a the money that God gave them, then they cannot possibly understand the Gospel. If they don't understand the Gospel, then they are not saved. If they are not saved, we do not want their money in the offering plate! Remember, the offering plate is passed as a part of worship. Note how in the Scripture narratives people gave to the Lord in extravagant ways. They understood what had been given them. Christ said, "...to whom little is forgiven, the same loveth little" (Luke 7:47a). This doesn't mean that there isn't much to forgive in everyone! In that passage the Pharisee had as much need for forgiveness as this woman who was a "sinner." The message, then, is this: When we realize how wretched, despicable, and unclean we are, then we can appreciate the sacrifice paid for our sins; and out of that appreciation grows our love; and love desires to give extravagantly. Indeed, it aches to give more! You see, if you teach tithing in any other sense, you run the risk of creating a Christian Mishnah. Even if I were Bill Gates and I gave away my entire fortune, it would not make me one molecule more worthy in the sight of God. Consequently, if you teach people that they are required to tithe, you run the risk of giving them the impression that they can buy their worthiness. You don't want that kind of money in your church. Better to have the lights turned out and the bank repossess the property! The problem is not that you have too few Christians willing to tithe. The problem is that you have too few Christians. In Him, Doc |
