Dear Pastor Tim, We have heard some references to the Scriptures relative to loving and witnessing to those who hate us. Alternatively, we have been encouraged to resolve the problem of our enemies by political actions. I would like to ask your opinion on how we bring to bear the Word of God even in our emotions. Explaining further: I seek to act in a loving manner to those who hate me, and I make every effort to expose them to the Gospel. Nonetheless, I find a degree of animus arising, from time to time, in my emotions. To me, those feelings -- even though I do not act on them (by God's grace) -- are evidence of hatred. I know that emotions come and go... but I would like to eliminate even the feelings that are contrary to the thrust of Christ's command to "love your enemies" (Matthew 5:44a). What advice would you offer to eliminate occasional feelings of ill will for our enemies? In Him, Doc |

Hi, Lionheart... Yes, sometimes violence is an appropriate action, even for the individual. For example, preventing our families from harm using a firearm. The distinction among believers, of course, is that once the evil deed is prevented, we immediately call an ambulance. Furthermore, the government is specifically authorized by God to use violence in preventing what is evil and promoting what is good (Romans 13). (You might be interested in the early church's deliberation on this topic called the "just war theory.") I am not addressing the painfully obvious aspects of our cultural, social, economic, and political circumstances. There is great evil out there and greater evil yet to come. Those things demand our proper, right, and immediate attention -- and praying about it goes without saying. Note in the posts about this all the external references. My question has to do with what is going on internally (Mark 7:21). If I understand passages like 1 Peter 4:17, obedience to the Gospel is an out and out essential. If I don't get that down pat, what difference will all the flag waving make? In Him, Doc |
