What can be determined by a comparison between Luke 4:23 and Luke 23:39? What do they say to you?
2 | Truly this Man was the Son of God.Mk 15 | Luke 4:23 | Searcher56 | 8279
Ray ... in Luke 4:23 Jesus was talking. Go back to verse 14-15, where Jesus was praised for His teaching, until He came to His home town, Nazareth (vv. 16ff). They thought of Him as Joseph's son (vs. 22). They wanted a miracle of healing. In Luke 23:39, the theif on the cross next to Jesus wanted to be rescued off the cross. He may of thought Jesus was able to get Himself off, so he wanted Jesus not to forget Him. The people of Nazareth wanted to kil Him, but, He was able to overcome the power of the crowd. It was His time, nor was it the right method. While He could of saved Himself off the cross, it was His time and it was the right method. The voice of one man, and even the crowd could not stop Him. While this may not of been the comparison you were lookin for, it was one that came to me as I was typing this. Steve |

3 | Truly this Man was the Son of God.Mk 15 | Luke 4:23 | Makarios | 8295
Interesting comparison, Ray! The Nelson NKJV Study Bible is unique in that it is my only source that attempts to answer this very question.. "Physician, heal yourself: The request for more signs was for Jesus to prove His claim by repeating the type of miraculous work He had done in Capernaum (see Mark 1:21-27). Such requests for signs often contained a mocking tone (Luke 11:16; 22:64; 23:8,35-37,39)." Jesus said that his generation looks for a 'sign', but the only sign that will be given to it is the sign of Jonah.. (Matt. 12:39-41) Even one of the prisoners on the cross ridiculed Jesus in this way.. Jesus very well could have 'saved Himself' from the cross of sin and death, but he voluntarily did this so that you and I could be truly 'made right' with God! Yet the people said (in His hearing), "You saved others, why can't You save Yourself??" But they had no idea that He was dying for them (those very scoffers), so that they could be made right with God Himself. For the Great Physician Himself said, "Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do.." This spiritual 'ignorance' on the part of humanity could apply to any generation that looks for a sign, for "blessed are those who do not see and yet believe".. Good study, Ray! |

Hi Nolan Keck, Thank you for considering these scriptures. I am pleased that you and Steve are people who capitalize Deity so we can know a little more of where we are coming from. Steve realized that the hometown crowd thought of Him as Joseph's son, and were starting to realize that He was more than that. The unclean demons were realizing who He was--the Holy (One) of God. Mark 1:24 So I capitalize Son of Joseph in my copy. Nolan, I agree with your capitalization of the Great Physician for I would capitalize Physician here in Luke 4:23 if it were in the middle of a sentence. Thus I capitalize "(Physician), heal Yourself..."..."do here in Your hometown as well." Your hometown is capitalized in the NKJ. I believe that Jesus was making claim to being a Prophet and was talking about Himself. In regards to the comparison of the two, I was thinking of "(Physician), heal Yourself" and "Are You not the (Christ?) Save Yourself and us!" The Physician did not need healing and the Christ did not need saving for indeed in verse 41 with my capitalization it would read, ..."but this Man has done nothing wrong." I appreciate your thoughts and your reference to seeing and believing as Thomas said, "My (Lord) and my God" and scripture goes on to say in John 20:31, "but these have been written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing you may have life in (His) name. See also John 1:12. Thanks for your input people. |
